Cal Newport

Cal Newport is a computer science professor at Georgetown University and a bestselling author recognized for exploring the intersections of technology, work, and culture. His influential books, including Deep Work, Digital Minimalism, and Slow Productivity, have sold over two million copies, been translated into more than 40 languages, and shaped productivity discourse worldwide.

経歴と著者の歩み

Cal Newport was born on June 23, 1982, in Houston, Texas, where he spent his early childhood before his family relocated to New Jersey near Princeton University when he was seven years old. This proximity to an academic environment foreshadowed his own scholarly trajectory. Newport attended Dartmouth College, where he demonstrated precocious literary ambition by signing his first book deal with Random House soon after his 21st birthday, while still an undergraduate. He went on to earn his PhD from MIT, specializing in distributed systems theory, before joining Georgetown University as a computer science professor, where he now holds the position of Full Professor and has published over 65 peer-reviewed articles cited more than 4,500 times in his academic career.

quote
Passion comes after you put in the hard work to become excellent at something valuable, not before. In other words, what you do for a living is much less important than how you do it
-So Good They Can't Ignore You
quote
If you don’t produce, you won’t thrive—no matter how skilled or talented you are
-Deep Work
quote
Clarity about what matters provides clarity about what does not
-Deep Work
quote
Who you are, what you think, feel, and do, what you love—is the sum of what you focus on
-Deep Work
quote
If you want to love what you do, abandon the passion mindset ('what can the world offer me?') and instead adopt the craftsman mindset ('what can I offer the world?')
-So Good They Can't Ignore You
quote
Develop the habit of letting small bad things happen. If you don't, you'll never find time for the life-changing big things
-Deep Work
quote
High-Quality Work Produced = (Time Spent) x (Intensity of Focus)
-Deep Work
quote
First, distraction remains a destroyer of depth
-Deep Work
quote
Humans are not wired to be constantly wired
-Digital Minimalism
quote
The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable in our economy. As a consequence, the few who cultivate this skill, and then make it the core of their working life, will thrive
