Catherine Shanahan built her career at the intersection of medicine, biochemistry, and nutrition. After earning a BS in biology from Rutgers University, training in biochemistry and genetics at Cornell University’s graduate school, and attending Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, she spent about a decade practicing family medicine in Hawaii. Shanahan has traced her interest in nutrition to her own experience as a competitive athlete dealing with injuries, but Hawaii proved to be the deeper turning point: there she studied ethnobotany and paid close attention to the food traditions of her healthiest patients.
