Le projet Star Wars, officiellement nommé l'Initiative de Défense Stratégique (IDS), est un programme annoncé par Ronald Reagan le 23 mars 1983. Ce projet ambitieux visait à construire un bouclier spatial capable d'intercepter les missiles nucléaires soviétiques avant qu'ils n'atteignent le sol américain. En proposant ce dôme technologique, Reagan souhaitait rendre les armes nucléaires impuissantes et inutiles, marquant un tournant majeur dans la stratégie de défense des États-Unis.
L'objectif principal de l'IDS était de sortir du dogme de la destruction mutuelle assurée, également connu sous l'acronyme MAD. Ce terme souligne le côté presque science-fiction de l'annonce, qui semblait tout droit sorti d'un film de Hollywood.
