A tug called Paducah approaches, using the codename "Sceptre" for the October to disguise it as a British submarine. During the journey, Ramius asks about the officers' families, and Ryan promises that within a year, the Soviet officers will be living their own lives freely in America. The submarine follows the tug past the aircraft carrier Saratoga toward the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. After brief introductions with Admiral Foster, Ryan slips away, feeling out of place among the naval officers. He walks off the submarine carrying his belongings and waits for Williams, who's being evacuated on a stretcher. After a brief exchange with the injured British officer, Ryan is escorted to CIA headquarters at Langley. At four in the morning, Ryan enters Greer's office where Moore and Ritter await him. They congratulate him and offer bourbon instead of coffee. When Ryan asks what's next, Greer hands him airline tickets for a 7:05 AM flight to London. Ryan returns the pistol he used against the GRU agent, learning the CIA knew about the threat but missed warning him by half an hour. In Moscow, Admiral Gorshkov reports to General Secretary Narmonov that Red October has been destroyed, presenting the depth gauge and missile identification as proof. However, KGB chief Gerasimov introduces contradictory intelligence, questioning why Americans cooperated in the search and rescue while simultaneously harassing Soviet fleet operations. Narmonov announces the KGB will investigate both possibilities, while the Party reasserts control over the fleet, planning to rotate officers more frequently. As Ryan boards a TWA 747 at 7:05 AM, he reflects on the extraordinary events he's witnessed. As the aircraft breaks through the overcast sky into sunlight, Jack Ryan does something unprecedented-for the first time in his life, he falls asleep on an airplane, his mission complete and the balance of power in the Cold War subtly but significantly altered forever.
