Explore the life of Nikola Tesla, the Wizard of Light, and his 1891 Columbia University demonstration during the high-stakes War of Currents against Thomas Edison.

The present is theirs; the future, for which I really worked, is mine.
The history of NIKOLA Tesla

In 1891, Nikola Tesla gave a dramatic presentation at Columbia University to prove the safety of his technology. He stood before an audience and allowed two hundred and fifty thousand volts from a high-voltage transformer to pass over his skin. Engulfed in what witnesses described as tongues of living flame, Tesla remained perfectly calm and unharmed. This cinematic display was designed to show the world that his methods were safe for public use despite the intense propaganda of the era.
The War of Currents was a massive propaganda battle regarding how electricity should be delivered to homes. Nikola Tesla championed Alternating Current, while his rival, Thomas Edison, promoted Direct Current. Edison attempted to discredit Tesla's work by claiming that Alternating Current was a dangerous death trap. To counter these claims, Tesla used his own body as a human conductor in public demonstrations to prove that his system was safe if handled correctly.
Nikola Tesla proved the safety of Alternating Current by performing daring public experiments where he acted as a human conductor. During his famous 1891 lecture, he grabbed brass balls connected to a high-voltage transformer, allowing massive amounts of electricity to race across his skin. By remaining unharmed while being engulfed in light, he effectively demonstrated to the public and his critics that Alternating Current was not the 'damnable' hazard that Thomas Edison claimed it to be.
