Napoleon Bonaparte was born as Napoleone di Buonaparte in 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica. His birth occurred just one year after France acquired the territory from Genoa. Growing up in a family of minor nobility, he was technically born into a brand-new French territory that was still actively resisting French rule, a factor that deeply influenced his early identity and perspective as an outsider.
Napoleon was sent to a French military school at the age of nine through his father Carlo's connections. It was a difficult and isolating time for him because he did not speak the language fluently and possessed a thick Corsican accent.
