No existe un editor jefe ni un momento mágico en el que una idea se vuelve consciente; en su lugar, diferentes versiones de la realidad compiten por la atención y solo aquellas que logran mayor impacto o "fama" en la red neuronal son las que experimentamos como pensamientos conscientes.

    Dennett describe al "yo" como un centro de gravedad narrativa, comparándolo con el centro de gravedad en la física: es una abstracción necesaria para realizar cálculos y organizar la información, pero no es un objeto físico que se pueda encontrar dentro del cuerpo. El "yo" funciona como una interfaz de usuario o una etiqueta que el cerebro utiliza para unificar la actividad de sus múltiples procesos internos, permitiéndonos interactuar con los demás y contar una historia coherente sobre nuestras acciones, aunque no exista un "capitán" real al mando.

    Según el guion, la mente humana se distingue de la de otros animales gracias a la colonización de "memes", que son unidades de cultura e información que se transmiten por imitación. El lenguaje actúa como un sistema operativo o un "virus" que se instala en el hardware biológico del cerebro, permitiéndonos pasar de un procesamiento paralelo y animal a una narrativa serial y compleja. Sin el lenguaje y la cultura, los humanos vivirían en un presente de impulsos; es el software de los memes lo que crea la estructura de nuestra vida interior.

    El Teatro Cartesiano es la idea errónea de que existe un lugar específico en el cerebro —un palco VIP o una pantalla— donde toda la información sensorial se reúne para ser observada por un "yo" espectador. Dennett sostiene que esta idea es un residuo del dualismo que debemos abandonar, ya que el procesamiento cerebral está totalmente distribuido. La sensación de que todo ocurre "en vivo" y en un solo lugar es en realidad una edición retrospectiva del cerebro, que ajusta los tiempos de las señales sensoriales para que la experiencia nos parezca unificada.

    La postura intencional es una herramienta evolutiva que consiste en atribuir creencias, deseos e intenciones a sistemas complejos para predecir su comportamiento, como cuando tratamos a una computadora de ajedrez como si "quisiera" ganarnos. Dennett argumenta que aplicamos esta misma lógica a nosotros mismos: como no podemos percibir nuestras neuronas disparándose, nos observamos desde fuera y nos inventamos una historia de "agente con voluntad" para explicar nuestros procesos químicos y biológicos internos.
