Explore the history of the F-16 Fighting Falcon, from Phil Oestricher’s accidental first flight at Edwards Air Force Base to its role as the agile Viper fighter jet.

The F-16 is a 'unity of contradictions': small but long-range, light but incredibly strong, and the first production fighter designed to be aerodynamically unstable to make it more agile.
A comprehensive lesson on the F-16 Fighting Falcon, covering its combat history and key missions, technical specifications and design evolution, and the reality of pilot training and the cockpit experience.

The F-16's maiden voyage was an unofficial six-minute flight that occurred on January 20, 1974, at Edwards Air Force Base. During a high-speed taxi test, test pilot Phil Oestricher faced wild oscillations that caused the wingtip missiles to scrape the runway. To avoid a crash, Oestricher made the split-second decision to pull up and take flight, marking a dramatic and unplanned start to the aircraft's legendary history.
The F-16 was the first production fighter jet specifically designed to be aerodynamically unstable. This radical design choice was intended to make the aircraft significantly more agile than its predecessors, allowing it to perform maneuvers that other planes could not achieve. This innovation helped the Viper rewrite the rules of aviation and established it as a lightweight but highly capable experiment that eventually became a global military standard.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon, often called the Viper by pilots, is currently the most common fixed-wing combat aircraft in the world. It accounts for approximately 15% of all active military planes globally. Because of its versatile design and agility, it serves as the backbone for numerous air forces, including those of the United States, Israel, and Ukraine, proving its enduring legacy in military aviation history.
