The F-15 Eagle was developed through the Fighter Experimental (FX) program because the U.S. Air Force lacked a dedicated air-superiority fighter during the Vietnam War. While the F-4 Phantom was a powerful machine, it struggled in dogfights against cheaper Soviet-built MiGs. After losing 382 Phantoms in combat and seeing kill ratios drop significantly compared to the Korean War, the Air Force demanded a pure air-to-air fighter that could out-maneuver any Soviet threat.
During the Vietnam War, the F-4 Phantom faced a tactical bottleneck because it was a Navy interceptor forced into a dogfighting role it wasn't originally built for.
