Marlen Haushofer (1920–1970) è stata una scrittrice austriaca e l'autrice de La parete, un romanzo distopico d'avanguardia che esplora i temi dell'isolamento, della sopravvivenza e del profondo legame dell'umanità con la natura. Nata Marie Helene Frauendorfer nell'Alta Austria, Haushofer studiò letteratura tedesca a Vienna e Graz prima di iniziare la sua carriera letteraria nel 1946.

Scriveva gestendo al contempo le faccende domestiche e lavorando nello studio dentistico del marito, componendo in momenti rubati che descriveva come "scrivere nell'aria". La parete, pubblicato nel 1963 e considerato il suo più grande successo, fu scritto meticolosamente a mano per quattro volte tra il 1960 e il 1963.

Il suo stile introspettivo e l'esplorazione incrollabile dell'esperienza femminile hanno dato forma anche ad opere degne di nota tra cui Un pugno di vita, La mansarda e Abbiamo ucciso Stella. L'approccio filosofico di Haushofer ai temi esistenziali le è valso molteplici premi letterari austriaci e ha influenzato profondamente scrittori successivi, tra cui il premio Nobel Elfriede Jelinek, che ha dedicato una delle sue opere teatrali alla Haushofer.

La parete è stato tradotto in numerose lingue e adattato in un film acclamato, consolidando il suo status di capolavoro della letteratura femminista e distopica.
