Nevertheless, we remain vulnerable to nature's extremes-floods, tornados, and temperature shifts have repeatedly erased promising civilizations.
Geography's influence on history cannot be overstated. Water has always drawn human settlement and enabled transportation, explaining why great civilizations clustered along rivers: Egypt along the Nile, Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates, India beside the Indus and Ganges, China along its mighty waterways. European nations likewise developed along their respective rivers, while desert civilizations huddled around life-giving oases.
The Mediterranean basin cradled Western civilization for two millennia, with Greek colonization establishing outposts around its shores. After 1492, Atlantic nations rose to prominence as ocean voyages became feasible. Today, air power is transforming civilization's map yet again, reducing coastal advantages and helping landlocked regions participate in global exchange.
The story of civilization is thus partly a tale of technological triumph over geographical limitations. As our mastery of the environment grows, geographic determinism weakens-ultimately, it is human imagination and initiative, not the earth itself, that propels civilization forward.

The Biological Imperatives That Drive History
Strip away civilization's veneer, and history reveals itself as merely a fragment of biology-human life just one portion of Earth's teeming organisms. When walking through dense woods surrounded by countless species, we briefly perceive our minority status on this impartial planet, seeing our achievements as merely part of life's broader struggle.
Biology teaches three fundamental lessons that shape historical patterns. First, life is competition. When resources are plentiful, this competition remains peaceful; when mouths outrun food, violence erupts. Our much-celebrated cooperation exists primarily as a competitive strategy, strengthening our groups against others. Our states magnify our acquisitive, greedy nature on a grand scale, acting like individuals in the hunting stage until they join larger protective alliances.
Second, life is selection. Nature, indifferent to our declarations of equality, makes us unequal in abilities and character from birth. These natural inequalities multiply with civilization's complexity. Freedom and equality stand as eternal enemies-freedom inevitably multiplies inequality while equality requires liberty's sacrifice. Utopias promising perfect equality are biologically doomed; the best we can realistically hope for is approximate equality of justice and opportunity.
Third, life must breed abundantly. Nature favors quantity for selecting quality and shows no preference for civilization over barbarism. When populations stagnate, more fertile groups eventually overrun them. Malthus identified nature's three balancing mechanisms-famine, pestilence, and war-though agricultural advances temporarily refuted his dire predictions. Birth control, while necessary for modern societies, carries potential dysgenic effects if used more by the intelligent than the simple, though intelligence isn't necessarily genetic. History demonstrates how birth rates can determine civilizations' fates, even religious dominance, as Catholic fertility may eventually overcome Protestant regions through simple demographic mathematics.

The Myth of Racial Determinism
In 1916, Madison Grant published "The Passing of the Great Race," limiting civilization's achievements to "Nordic" peoples-fair-haired, blue-eyed Scandinavians, Scythians, Baltic Germans, and Anglo-Saxons. According to Grant, these "blond beasts" swept south from harsh northern climates, creating civilization wherever they conquered. He claimed Nordics invaded India establishing Sanskrit and the caste system, conquered Greece, Italy, France, England, and Russia, and colonized America. Grant lamented that by 2000, Nordic stock would be depleted through wars and outbred by Mediterranean and Alpine peoples, causing Western civilization's collapse.
This racial theory crumbles against overwhelming counterevidence: Chinese civilization's remarkable five-thousand-year endurance, pre-Columbian Mayan and Aztec achievements, Dravidian cultural accomplishments in southern India, Khmer monuments at Angkor Wat, and Semitic civilizations from Babylon to Islamic Spain. Egypt, Greece, and Rome developed through geographical opportunity and economic development rather than racial constitution, with much of their culture deriving from Oriental sources.
History demonstrates convincingly that civilization makes the people, not race making civilization. Environment shapes human characteristics over generations, and what we perceive as "racial" antipathies stem more from cultural differences than ethnic origins. American civilization continues developing through racial mixture, still forming its distinctive character. The antidote to racial prejudice lies in recognizing civilization as humanity's cooperative achievement to which all peoples have contributed essential elements.

The Individual's Role in History's Unfolding Drama
Society is founded not on abstract ideals but on human nature itself. This nature comprises fundamental tendencies and feelings-twelve instincts (six positive, six negative) that preserve individuals, families, groups, and species. Each instinct generates habits and accompanying emotional responses that guide human behavior.
Despite theoretical evolutionary changes, history reveals remarkable consistency in human conduct across millennia. Ancient Greeks behaved remarkably like modern French, Romans like English. The poor harbor the same impulses as the rich, just fewer opportunities to implement them. Successful rebels typically adopt the very methods they once condemned after gaining power.
Human evolution during recorded history has been primarily social rather than biological-advancing through economic, political, intellectual and moral innovation transmitted by imitation, custom, and education. Custom and tradition function like heredity and instinct, providing ready responses to typical situations. But new challenges require innovation and adaptation.
This reality restores the "great man" as a formative historical force. Though shaped by circumstances, the initiative individual isn't merely an effect-his ideas and decisions vitally influence history's course. Churchill's eloquence could equal a thousand regiments; Napoleon's strategy could win seemingly impossible campaigns; prophets like Mohammed could inspire disadvantaged peoples to surprising power. Inventors, thinkers, and leaders are both effects of countless causes and causes of endless effects.
Society functions through the cooperation of submissive and masterful natures, just as history advances when the imitative majority follows innovative minorities, who in turn follow originative individuals. As Durant memorably phrases it: "History in the large is the conflict of minorities; the majority applauds the victor and supplies the human material of social experiment."

Morality's Evolution Through Historical Epochs
Morals are the rules by which society exhorts its members to behave consistently with its order, security and growth-as demonstrated by Jewish enclaves maintaining cultural continuity through strict moral codes across sixteen centuries of dispersion.
Moral codes vary across time and place because they adjust to historical and environmental conditions. In hunting societies, pugnacity, brutality, greed, and sexual readiness were survival advantages. The agricultural revolution demanded new virtues: industriousness over bravery, thrift over violence, peace over war. Children became economic assets, making birth control immoral. This agricultural moral code-emphasizing continence, early marriage, monogamy and multiple maternity-maintained itself for fifteen hundred years in Christian Europe, producing some of history's strongest characters.
The Industrial Revolution transformed this moral structure. Factory work separated individuals from families; economic maturity came later; children ceased being assets; marriage delayed; cities discouraged marriage while facilitating sexual encounters; contraception separated intercourse from pregnancy; parental authority lost its economic foundation; urban anonymity protected rebellion; and scientific advances undermined religious supports. Wars accelerated moral laxity, as they did in ancient Greece and Rome.
Yet history offers consolation by showing that sin has flourished in every age. Behind the facade of war, politics, and misfortune were millions of orderly homes and devoted marriages. Acts of charity have nearly equaled battlefield cruelties. Perhaps our current moral uncertainty isn't decay but transition between agricultural and industrial moral codes. Civilizations decay leisurely-Greece produced masterpieces for 250 years after moral weakening began; Rome survived 600 years after Greek influence supposedly "corrupted" its morals.

Religion's Indispensable Role in Civilization
Even skeptical historians respect religion's indispensable function across all lands and ages. It comforts the suffering, disciplines the young, gives meaning to humble lives, stabilizes relationships through sacraments, and prevents class warfare by offering supernatural hope to the disadvantaged. When religion declines, communism grows-"Heaven and utopia are buckets in a well."
Religion began not with morality but with fear-propitiating hidden forces in nature through offerings, sacrifice, and prayer. It became vital when priests used these fears to support morality and law, claiming divine origin for local codes: Thoth giving laws to Menes, Shamash to Hammurabi, Yahveh to Moses, Egeria to Numa. States shared lands and revenues with grateful priests who sanctified their authority.
Religious institutions have committed their share of historical sins. The Church employed pious legends, dubious relics, questionable miracles, and forgeries like the "Donation of Constantine" to justify papal power. It prioritized orthodoxy over morality, disgraced itself through the Inquisition, fomented religious wars, and played only a modest role in abolishing slavery, allowing philosophers to lead humanitarian movements.
History shows mankind desires religion rich in miracle and myth. The Church maintains core doctrines despite reason's challenge, recognizing changes would disillusion millions whose hopes are tied to consolatory imaginations. No reconciliation between religion and philosophy seems possible except through mutual recognition of their complementary roles.
Does history support belief in God? The evidence suggests either blind or impartial fatality with haphazard scenes we subjectively call beautiful. Nature and history define good as what survives, showing no prejudice favoring Christ over Genghis Khan. Religious decline began with Copernicus and accelerated through Protestant fragmentation, Biblical criticism, deism, exposure of religious frauds, industrialization, scientific advancement, and moral objections to vengeful theology.
Yet religion has "many lives, and a habit of resurrection." Atheistic movements are repeatedly followed by religious revivals. Puritanism and paganism alternate throughout history, with religion prevailing when laws are weak and skepticism flourishing when government is strong. Our current moral disorder may generate another religious revival. History provides no significant example of a society maintaining moral life without religion's aid.

The Economic Rhythms That Shape Civilizations
According to Marx, history is economics in action-the contest among individuals, groups, and states for resources and economic power. Political forms, religious institutions, and cultural creations all stem from economic realities. The Industrial Revolution brought democracy, feminism, socialism, religious decline, and moral loosening. Even the Trojan War was fundamentally about controlling the Dardanelles trade route, not Helen's beauty-those "subtle Greeks knew how to cover naked economic truth with the fig leaf of a phrase."
The economic interpretation illuminates much history: the Delian Confederacy built the Parthenon; Cleopatra's treasury revitalized Augustus's Italy; the Crusades sought Eastern trade routes; the Medici financed the Florentine Renaissance; and the French Revolution occurred because the economically powerful middle class needed political freedom.
Yet Marx underestimated non-economic mass motivations like religious fervor in Muslim armies, nationalist ardor in Hitler's troops, or mob fury in the Gordon riots. Often military conquest preceded economic control-as with the Moorish conquest of Spain or the Mongol conquest of Western Asia-suggesting "the generals could write a military interpretation of history."
History shows that small farms, unable to use machinery profitably, give way to large-scale production under capitalist or communist ownership. "Civilization is a parasite on the man with the hoe," but that man now operates tractors and must choose between being an employee of capital or state. Meanwhile, bankers who "manage money manage all," financing wars and governments, knowing history is inflationary and "money is the last thing a wise man will hoard."
Every economic system must ultimately rely on profit motives for productivity, as alternatives like slavery, police supervision, or ideological enthusiasm prove unproductive, expensive, or transient. Men are judged by their ability to produce-except in war, when destruction becomes the measure.
The concentration of wealth is natural and inevitable in history, occurring faster under democracy than despotism. As societies progress, the gap between rich and poor widens until the strength of numbers rivals the strength of ability, creating unstable conditions resolved either through legislative redistribution or violent revolution. This pattern repeats throughout history-Solon saved Athens from revolution in 594 B.C. through moderate reforms, while Rome's Senate rejected redistribution proposals from the Gracchus brothers, leading to a century of civil war until Augustus established peace.
Capitolo 9
The Eternal Cycle of Political Evolution
History speaks well of all forms of government, recognizing that freedom requires limitation to prevent chaos. Government's primary purpose is establishing order through centralized force as an alternative to private violence. Power naturally converges to centers, as seen in Richelieu's monarchy and America's strengthening federal government, with international governance now developing as economics transcends borders.
Monarchy appears most natural, applying familial authority to society, and has been history's most prevalent and enduring governance form. Rome's adoptive monarchy under Nerva through Marcus Aurelius created what Gibbon called possibly "the only period of history in which the happiness of a great people was the sole object of government." Yet monarchy's overall record is mixed, with succession wars, hereditary incompetence, and the overwhelming complexity of modern states limiting its effectiveness.
Most governments have been oligarchies-rule by minorities selected through birth (aristocracies), religion (theocracies), or wealth (democracies). Aristocracy theoretically trains a special class from birth for governance while preserving cultural standards against rapid change. However, aristocrats rarely produce art or literature themselves, and their privilege often leads to hedonism, exploitation, and stagnation, eventually triggering revolution.
Democracy has existed in its modern form only since the French Revolution. Even in ancient Athens, of 315,000 residents, only 43,000 were voting citizens-excluding women, workers, shopkeepers, and aliens. Citizens divided into oligarchic (aristocracy and upper bourgeoisie) and democratic factions. During Pericles' leadership, aristocracy prevailed, producing Athens' artistic golden age. After Athens' defeat in the Peloponnesian War, the demos rose to power, leading to brutal class warfare throughout Greece.
Rome followed Plato's sequence of political evolution from monarchy to aristocracy to democracy to dictatorship. In the third and second centuries B.C., Roman oligarchs conquered the Mediterranean, with patricians absorbing the wealth while displacing native farmers. Corruption flourished as money replaced land as the source of power, with rival factions purchasing votes and resorting to violence. After Caesar's assassination, Romans accepted Augustus's monarchy in 27 B.C., completing the Platonic cycle.
Despite its flaws, democracy has done less harm and more good than any other government form. It gave human existence zest and camaraderie, freed thought and enterprise, broke down privilege, and raised ability from every rank. Athens and Rome became history's most creative cities under democracy, while America provided unprecedented abundance. Democracy has committed to education and public health, aiming for equality of opportunity rather than outcome.
Capitolo 10
War: History's Brutal Constant
War persists as a historical constant, undiminished by civilization or democracy. In 3,421 years of recorded history, only 268 have been without war. We recognize war as the ultimate form of competition and natural selection in humanity. As Heraclitus said, "Polemos pater panton"-war is the father of all things, generating ideas, inventions, institutions, and states. Peace remains an unstable equilibrium maintained only through acknowledged supremacy or equal power.
Wars arise from the same impulses driving individual competition: acquisitiveness, pugnacity, and pride-the desire for food, land, materials, fuels, and mastery. While individuals submit to moral and legal restraints in exchange for state protection, states acknowledge no substantial restraints, having no superstate to protect them or effective international law to constrain them.
When European states freed themselves from papal oversight, each fostered nationalism to supplement military power, generating hatred toward potential enemies while professing peace. Before the French Revolution, aristocracies fought wars while civilians maintained mutual respect across borders. By the twentieth century, improved communication, transport, weapons, and propaganda transformed war into struggles between entire peoples, destroying centuries of civilization in a single conflict.
Military leaders and rulers have always dismissed philosophers' dislike of war as cowardice. They point to Charles Martel's victory at Tours preventing Islamic conquest of Europe and arms protecting classical heritage from Mongol invasions. Though young men dying in battle is tragic, generals argue that more die in automobile accidents, and that war provides discipline and glory for restless youth. Even philosophers acknowledge that prolonged peace can weaken a nation's martial readiness.
The debate between military necessity and philosophical idealism continues. Generals argue nations must be prepared to defend themselves by any means necessary, silencing moral commandments when survival is at stake. Philosophers counter that traditional power politics will only multiply destruction given modern weapons. Perhaps nations will unite only when facing external threats-possibly someday from beyond our planet.
Capitolo 11
The Rhythm of Civilizational Rise and Fall
Civilization-defined as social order promoting cultural creation-is an intricate web of relationships easily destroyed. History is littered with ruins of once-great civilizations, raising questions about patterns in their rise and fall.
Some philosophers have envisioned extreme historical determinism, like Virgil's notion that events would eventually repeat exactly, driving Nietzsche to madness with his "eternal recurrence" concept. History does repeat in broad outlines-states rise and fall, civilizations progress from agriculture to industry to finance, thought evolves from supernatural to naturalistic explanations. This happens because human nature changes slowly and responds stereotypically to basic stimuli. But in complex civilizations, individuals become more differentiated, making outcomes less predictable.
Saint-Simon divided history into alternating "organic" periods (unified belief, organization, stability) and "critical" periods (doubt, individualism, transition). He believed socialism would begin a new organic age. Spengler similarly saw civilizations moving from unified, artistic coherence to disorganization, skepticism and artistic aberration. Despite their differences, both recognized that civilizations rise and fall in patterns.
States typically form through conquest, with decrees becoming laws that combine with customs to create social order. Civilization develops when rulers organize subjects to exploit natural resources, or when societies face challenging changes requiring adaptation. Success depends on creative individuals with clarity of mind and energy of will.
Decay comes not from some mystical limitation on corporate life, but from leaders' failure to meet challenges. These challenges may include environmental changes, soil exhaustion, replacement of free labor with slaves, trade route shifts, excessive taxation, loss of markets, wealth concentration leading to class conflict, or urban poverty creating pressure for welfare or risking revolution. As inequality grows, a cultural drag develops when the majority lacks standards of excellence, causing internal barbarization. Education spreads secularism, weakening moral codes once buttressed by religion. Between moral systems, societies surrender to luxury and disorder, with few feeling it "beautiful and honorable to die for one's country."
Capitolo 12
The Reality of Human Progress
Against the backdrop of civilizations rising and falling, progress seems dubious. Science proves neutral, killing as readily as healing. Our comforts may weaken our stamina while our technological advances often bring unintended consequences. We've escaped theology but struggle to develop natural ethics strong enough to control our baser instincts. Has philosophy advanced since Confucius? Is our art superior to ancient masterpieces?
Yet defining progress as "increasing control of the environment by life" reveals genuine advancement. Progress isn't continuous or universal-some nations advance while others decline, and the same society may progress in technology while regressing in arts. Modern existence, despite its chaos, shows improvement over primitive conditions in longevity, comfort, and knowledge. We've eliminated famine in developed nations, reduced superstition, and created democratic institutions far superior to ancient governance.
Civilizations die, but their achievements survive. The fundamental elements of civilization-fire-making, tools, language, agriculture, social organization, morality-persist as the connective tissue of human history. Education represents our finest contemporary achievement, transmitting civilization to each new generation. While we may not have excelled the geniuses of antiquity, we've raised the average level of knowledge beyond any previous age.
Education should be viewed not merely as fact accumulation or vocational preparation, but as the transmission of our mental, moral, technical and aesthetic heritage to as many people as possible. The heritage we now transmit is richer than ever before-richer than Pericles', Leonardo's, or Voltaire's-because it includes all their contributions and those that followed.
Progress exists not because we're born healthier or wiser than our ancestors, but because we inherit this accumulated knowledge. History is the creation and recording of this heritage; progress is its preservation and use. To the historian, the past becomes not a chamber of horrors but a celestial city where great souls still speak, teach and sing. Our greatest pride should be that we can put meaning into our lives that transcends death by transmitting our civilized heritage to our children.
