If all its factories burned down and all its employees were fired, Peugeot would still exist as a legal entity that could rebuild everything. No other animal can create such powerful abstractions. Was this life idyllic? Not entirely. Violence did occur, child mortality was high, and life could be precarious. But the evidence suggests that in many ways, hunter-gatherers were healthier, less stressed, and possibly happier than people in subsequent agricultural societies.
The curtain of silence that has fallen over this longest chapter of human history makes it difficult to know with certainty how these ancestors lived their daily lives. The Agricultural Revolution: History's Biggest Fraud

From an evolutionary perspective, agriculture was phenomenally successful. It allowed human populations to explode, with the world's population growing from about 5-8 million at the end of the foraging era to over 7 billion today. But if we measure success by the happiness and well-being of individual humans, the Agricultural Revolution may have been history's biggest fraud.
The transition to agriculture happened gradually. Foragers began by cultivating their favorite foods alongside their traditional lifestyle. In the Levant, for example, people started planting wheat while still gathering other foods. As the climate changed to favor cereals, people settled in permanent villages to tend their fields. Eventually, they became full-time farmers.
But this "progress" came at a steep price. Agricultural diets were less varied and nutritious than forager diets, leading to malnutrition and deficiency diseases. Farmers worked longer and harder hours than foragers, bent over in fields from dawn to dusk. Living in permanent settlements alongside domesticated animals created ideal conditions for infectious diseases to evolve and spread. When Hernan Cortes and his conquistadors arrived in Mexico in 1519, they were able to communicate with the Aztecs about gold because both cultures valued this metal, despite having no common language or culture.
Before money, people traded through barter, which was cumbersome and inefficient. How many bananas is a pair of shoes worth? The invention of money solved this problem by providing a universal medium of exchange and unit of account. Money isn't a material reality - it's a psychological construct. It works because everyone believes in it.
Empires have been the most common form of political organization for the last 2,500 years. An empire is a political order that rules over a significant number of distinct peoples, each with its own cultural identity and territory. Empires like the Roman, Persian, Chinese, and British absorbed numerous smaller cultures, spreading ideas, practices, and people across vast regions.
While empires are often remembered for their brutality and exploitation, they also created common cultures across diverse populations. The legacy of empires is deeply embedded in contemporary cultures. Indian democracy, for example, is a direct inheritance from the British Empire, as are its railways, political divisions, and legal system.
Universal religions like Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam created the third network of global unification. Monotheism took this a step further, claiming that a single god ruled the entire universe.
In the first millennium BCE, new kinds of religions emerged that focused not on gods but on natural laws. Buddhism, Jainism, and similar philosophies proposed that the cosmic order derived from universal laws of nature rather than the whims of gods. These religions emphasized individual spiritual practice and ethical behavior rather than sacrifices to deities.
In recent centuries, new ideologies like liberalism, socialism, and nationalism have functioned as religions in many ways. They provide comprehensive worldviews, moral codes, and senses of community and purpose. Isaac Newton's laws of motion and gravity, for instance, used mathematics to describe and predict physical phenomena with unprecedented accuracy.
Science gained its social prestige and political power not from abstract theory but from its practical applications. The connection between science and technology - between knowledge and power - has driven much of modern history. Governments and businesses fund scientific research because it leads to new technologies, which translate into military power, economic prosperity, and social well-being.
The Scientific Revolution also introduced the idea of progress - the notion that we can make things better through acquiring new knowledge. The Scientific Revolution was intertwined with European imperialism. As Europeans explored and conquered the world, they collected information about new lands, species, and cultures. Captain James Cook's voyages, for instance, combined scientific research with imperial expansion, mapping new territories while claiming them for Britain.
Why did this revolution begin in Europe rather than China, India, or the Islamic world? Europe wasn't more advanced than these civilizations in 1500. The key difference was Europe's unique combination of imperial ambition and scientific curiosity. European conquerors ventured into unknown territories with a mindset that embraced the unknown and sought to map and understand it, rather than assuming they already knew everything important.
This mentality is evident in how Europeans drew their maps. Medieval Islamic and Christian maps showed the entire world with no blank spaces, filling in unknown areas with imaginary monsters or biblical stories. Early modern European maps, in contrast, left unknown areas blank, acknowledging ignorance and inviting exploration.

Capitalism: The Religion of Growth
Alongside science, another revolutionary force emerged in the modern era: capitalism. The capitalist creed holds that economic growth is the supreme good, and the way to generate growth is to reinvest profits in increasing production.
For most of history, people believed that the economy was a zero-sum game - one person's gain was another's loss. Wealth was something to be captured, not created. Capitalism introduced the radical idea that through reinvestment and increasing productivity, the total amount of wealth could grow, potentially benefiting everyone.

The Industrial Revolution, powered by fossil fuels and new machines, accelerated capitalism's transformation of society. Production soared, cities grew, and daily life was reorganized around the rhythms of industry rather than nature. The factory system, with its emphasis on standardization and efficiency, treated both human workers and animals as interchangeable parts in a vast machine.
Despite its flaws, capitalism has delivered unprecedented material prosperity. Global per capita production has increased at least tenfold in the past 500 years. Life expectancy has more than doubled. Many diseases have been conquered. Famine, once common, has become rare.

The Transformation of Society: Family, Community, and Peace
The Scientific and Industrial Revolutions didn't just change our technology and economy - they transformed the basic structures of human society. Traditional family and community bonds have weakened, while states and markets have grown stronger.
For thousands of years, humans lived in intimate communities where most people knew each other personally. Extended families provided economic security, education, healthcare, and insurance against hardship. Communities enforced norms and provided a sense of identity and belonging.
The industrial age shattered these structures with remarkable speed. Nuclear families replaced extended ones, and even these smaller family units lost many of their traditional functions to the state and market. Governments now provide education through public schools, healthcare through clinics and hospitals, and security through police and military forces. Markets provide jobs, goods, services, and insurance.

The homicide rate in medieval Europe was about 30 per 100,000 people per year; in contemporary Europe, it's around 1 per 100,000.
Several factors explain this pacification. Strong states monopolized violence and suppressed feuding. Commerce created incentives for peace, as trading partners are more valuable alive than dead. And empires expanded zones of stability across vast regions.
Since 1945, peace has become even more prevalent. Great powers no longer fight each other directly. Colonial empires have dissolved without massive bloodshed. And international trade has created a global economy where conquest is less profitable than commerce.
Nuclear weapons have played a paradoxical role in this peace. By making war between nuclear powers potentially suicidal, they have forced restraint on the most powerful nations. The threat of mutual destruction has created what some call the "Long Peace" - an unprecedented period without direct conflict between major powers.

After all this progress - scientific, economic, and social - are we actually happier than our ancestors? This question is surprisingly difficult to answer.

Conversely, despite our material abundance, we may suffer from wanting even more than we have.

Evolution has programmed our biochemical system to maintain a relatively stable level of happiness, regardless of our achievements. This biological perspective suggests that neither the Agricultural Revolution nor the Scientific Revolution made people significantly happier. They allowed more humans to exist, but not necessarily happier ones.
The meaning we find in our lives also affects our happiness. Medieval Christians found profound meaning in their religious beliefs, while modern consumers might find it in career success or family relationships. Neither worldview is objectively "true," but both can provide a sense of purpose that contributes to happiness.
As we look to the future, humanity faces unprecedented challenges and opportunities. The same scientific and technological powers that have allowed us to conquer disease and extend life are now enabling us to reshape life itself.
