Thomas à Kempis (1380-1471) è stato un monaco agostiniano, sacerdote e scrittore spirituale tedesco-olandese, noto soprattutto per aver scritto L'imitazione di Cristo, una delle opere più influenti della letteratura devozionale cristiana della storia. Nato Thomas Hammerken a Kempen, in Germania, entrò nel monastero di Monte Sant'Agnese nei Paesi Bassi all'età di 19 anni, dove trascorse oltre sette decenni in contemplazione, preghiera, copiatura di manoscritti e guida spirituale.

La sua scrittura riflette il movimento della devotio moderna, enfatizzando l'umiltà, la devozione interiore e il distacco dalle distrazioni mondane per coltivare una relazione più profonda con Dio.

L'imitazione di Cristo è strutturata in quattro trattati che riguardano la vita spirituale, l'autodisciplina, la consolazione interiore e i sacramenti.
