As a teenager, I sometimes took friends to the stream while Dad stayed home. We brought beer and an air gun, shooting at eels and infuriating Dad when he found pellets in the fish. I think he felt we were being disrespectful to both him and the eel. We grew apart naturally-not from conflict but because everything changed. The current that once swept Dad to a new place now carried me away from him. At twenty, I moved to university, a strange place of large buildings and abstract language, where I mimicked exotic social codes and carried books like identity papers. Every summer I'd return home and we'd fish for eel, now using modern bottom fishing with hazel rods, heavy sinkers, and bells that would jingle when we had a bite. We sat in camping chairs through the night, watching bats swerve around our rods, drinking coffee and talking about eels we'd caught and lost. Eventually, my parents bought a small red cabin by a lake. We fished for pike and perch there, exploring the lake's hidden corners, but mysteriously, we never caught a single eel, despite Dad's insistence that "there must be eels here." Dad fell ill in early summer at fifty-six. After months of pain, doctors found an aggressive tumor-the result of years working with asphalt, its warm steam penetrating to his very core. He underwent major surgery and spent months in the hospital, pale and thin, the first time I'd seen him truly weak. It was then my mother revealed that my grandfather wasn't Dad's biological father. Dad's real father was someone unknown who'd abandoned my grandmother when she was pregnant. Dad had spent his first seven years without a father until Nana married the man I called Grandad, who treated Dad as his own son. The surgery gave Dad four more years before the tumors returned, more brutal each time. By sixty, he was too weakened to fight. One evening, I noticed his eyes had turned yellowish-gray, but he avoided my gaze. Weeks later in hospice, I sat holding his stiff, warm hand, listening to his faint, irregular breathing, wondering how one recognizes death. A week after the funeral, we visited the cabin on another warm, stifling summer day. The grass needed mowing, and the osprey soared above the perfectly still lake. Standing by the water with fishing rod in hand, I was called away briefly. Upon returning, I found my rod sliding rapidly through the grass toward the water. I grabbed it just in time, feeling the familiar undulating resistance of a fish that swam toward the water lilies before suddenly turning shoreward. The line became stuck among the rocks by the shoreline. Time stood still as I struggled with the taut line, coaxing and pulling while the rod bent like a reed. Finally sinking to my knees, I peered into the murky water and saw a large, pale gray eel with black button eyes slowly slither up from the shadows. It looked directly at me, as if ensuring I could see it. As I let go of the line, the hook came free and the eel turned back to the hidden depths. I sat there by the water's edge, everything quiet, the sun casting a white sheen across the surface that hid everything beneath like a mirror-a secret that was now mine.
