David Foster Wallace (1962–2008) è stato un acclamato romanziere e saggista postmoderno. È l'autore di Il tennis come esperienza religiosa (titolo originale: String Theory), una raccolta che esplora il tennis come lente per esaminare la cultura contemporanea, l'ossessione umana e il rigore intellettuale.

Wallace ha costruito la sua reputazione letteraria attraverso opere che sfidano i generi come Infinite Jest — un monumentale romanzo del 1996 inserito da Time tra i 100 migliori romanzi in lingua inglese — e raccolte di saggi come Una cosa divertente che non farò mai più.
