This explains the paradoxical position of opposition parties toward power. When an Italian Communist leader declares "there's no need to fear Communists taking power," he simultaneously communicates multiple contradictory messages: they'll change nothing fundamental, they'll never truly exercise power, genuine power no longer exists, and contradictorily, that he himself fears Communist power. The statement reflects not political strategy but the fundamental indeterminacy of power itself.
The system's only remaining strategy is to inject "reality" everywhere through crisis discourse. Power multiplies signs of reality as it attempts to combat the spiral of simulation, but it's too late. Society now overproduces to restore the real that escapes it, creating hyperrealism-a hallucinatory resemblance of the real to itself.

This sacred space traces civilization's long route from prehistoric man through Marx and Einstein to arrive at consumer brands-a culture that chose to bury itself to escape its own shadow, consecrating its seductions and artifices to another world. The triumph of advertising isn't just economic but metaphysical-it represents the final victory of surface over depth, appearance over meaning.
Consider how contemporary cultural institutions have adopted advertising's logic. Museums design exhibitions for Instagram moments rather than contemplation. Universities market themselves through lifestyle branding rather than educational substance. Even political movements package themselves in slogans and visual identities borrowed from commercial marketing.
This isn't simply commercialization-it's a fundamental transformation in how meaning operates. Advertising doesn't just sell products; it sells a relationship to reality itself. This vision opposes the gathering of the body as labor in production to its dispersion as anagram in mutilation. The body becomes a sign offering itself to the exchange of bodily signs, with body and technology diffracting their bewildered signs through each other in carnal abstraction. Cloning abolishes both Mother and Father, eliminating the intertwining of genes and differences. The subject disappears as duplication ends division, creating not reflection but identical iteration: i + i + i. Neither child, nor twin, nor narcissistic reflection, the clone materializes the double genetically, abolishing alterity and the imaginary.

The End of Science Fiction: When Models Precede Reality
Three orders of simulacra structure our relationship with reality: natural simulacra based on imitation that aim to restore nature in God's image; productive simulacra founded on energy and machine materialization with Promethean aims of expansion; and simulacra of simulation based on information and cybernetic control, aiming for total operationality and hyperreality.
As we've entered this third order, science fiction as a genre has died. When the gap between real and imaginary collapses into models, science fiction can no longer function as projection or transcendence. Reality cannot surpass the model-it becomes merely the model's alibi. The real itself becomes our lost utopia, no longer possible but only dreamable as a vanished object.
Contemporary science fiction can only desperately rehallucinate the past, as in Philip K. Dick's works, where nostalgia becomes the dominant mode. The universe of science fiction has imploded alongside our conception of the universe itself. We now exist in hyperreality-neither real nor unreal, possible nor impossible-a universe of simulation without origin or future.
J.G. Ballard's "Crash" exemplifies this new science fiction that isn't one, depicting our hyperfunctional world where nothing is invented but everything is accelerated into a giant, simulated machine. Science fiction now exists everywhere in the surrounding simulation, no longer requiring imagination but emerging from the operational world's inertia itself.
This transformation extends beyond literature to our relationship with technology and futurity. Consider how technological innovation increasingly focuses not on creating genuinely new possibilities but on perfecting existing systems-smartphones become incrementally better rather than transformatively different. Our visions of the future increasingly resemble our present, just with more efficient versions of what we already have.
The most telling sign of this shift is how our cultural imagination has turned from utopian to dystopian. Where once science fiction imagined better worlds, it now predominantly warns of worse ones. This reflects not just political pessimism but a deeper crisis in our ability to imagine alternatives to our current system. When simulation precedes reality, genuine novelty becomes increasingly difficult to conceive.

The Silent Suffering: Animals in the Age of Simulation
Industrial breeding has created unprecedented animal suffering. European veterinarians report alarming psychological disorders: rabbits develop anxiety and become sterile; chickens experience mass hysteria; pigs turn cannibalistic; calves compulsively lick their surroundings until death. These animals literally somatize their distress through cancers, ulcers, and heart attacks.
The specialists' solution reveals the system's cynicism: "a bit more space" would solve these problems. This concern for animal welfare emerges only when profitability is threatened, showing how "humanism" and "quality of life" are merely economic calculations. The parallel between these animals sick from surplus value and humans on assembly lines is illuminating-in both cases, capitalists discover "humanism" only when exploitation becomes inefficient.
Against industrial death, animals have only suicide as resistance. We bestow upon them a "psychic life" only when they malfunction within our death machinery, just as we discover prisoners' psychology only when simple incarceration fails. The psychic realm emerges precisely at the point where rational exploitation breaks down.
Animals' status has degraded alongside human progress. Once sacred beings worthy of divine sacrifice, animals have been demoted to mere beasts as humanism advanced-a logic parallel to racism. The abyss separating humans from animals today allows us to send them into space or laboratories in our place, to liquidate species while archiving specimens in reserves and zoos, all covered by a racist sentimentality.
In primitive societies, animals had divine status; certain tribes identified with animals not through classification but through a symbolic cycle that abolished species distinctions. Our modern sentimentality toward pets is proportional to our disdain-we make animals worthy of affection precisely by relegating them to irresponsibility and inhumanity.
Those who sacrificed animals honored them by holding them accountable; we take them for nothing and pride ourselves on being "humane." We've made them racially inferior, no longer worthy of justice but only of affection or experimentation. The original monstrosity of beasts-object of terror, fascination, and symbolic exchange-has been replaced by spectacular monstrosity like King Kong, where humanity has shifted to captive bestiality.

The University in Ruins: Knowledge Without Value
The university lies in ruins-nonfunctional in markets and employment, lacking cultural substance or purpose. Power itself is in ruins, making impossible any return to the confrontations of 1968 when knowledge challenged power. Today's strikes only regenerate the fiction of a possible university, substituting an ideal for its actual operation.
University administrators panic at the idea of diplomas without knowledge equivalence-not fearing political subversion but the terror of value functioning alone, detached from content. University values proliferate like floating capital, spiraling without referential criteria, completely devalorized yet creating a social horizon of value. The ghostly presence of phantom value grows stronger even as its reference point is lost.
This situation reveals the desperate initiation to empty forms of value, where students and teachers collude in bitterness and indifference, maintaining a simulacrum of pedagogy through artificial power roles. The system wants operational values in the void-diplomas without work-which we inaugurated while believing we were subverting it.
The Left desperately reproduces power precisely where the system is ending it, conserving everything the system itself is liquidating. Power no longer believes in the university, knowing it merely shelters and surveils youth. Diplomas are worthless, yet the system provokes energies around this dead referential.
This analysis extends beyond academia to all institutions that once claimed to produce and transmit value. Museums preserve art divorced from living culture; governments maintain the appearance of sovereignty while real power flows through financial markets; religious institutions perform rituals whose original meaning has been forgotten. In each case, the simulation of value replaces value itself.
The violence of ritual, work, and knowledge has been replaced by simulation that can continue indefinitely, as there is no end to the simulacrum of value and work. The university must transform its rotting into violent death through mockery and defiance, offering itself as a model of decomposition to society-not defending territory but brandishing the cadaver of dead culture at power.

Transparent Nihilism: Living in the Desert of the Real
Today's nihilism is one of transparency, more radical than historical forms because it belongs to the system itself. We've entered simulation and deterrence-nihilism realized not through destruction but through the transparent operation of things. Contemporary nihilism is neither aesthetic (like Romanticism) nor political (like Surrealism), but a nihilism of neutrality and indifference.
We're fascinated by all forms of disappearance, including our own. Analysis itself contributes to the freezing of meaning, as theories float while the desert grows. Against the hegemonic system, only terrorism offers the trait of reversion, the challenge the system must answer through its own death. Yet the system is itself nihilistic, pouring everything into indifference.
Death no longer has a stage, events have no consequences, and meaning is mortal-but appearances remain immortal, invulnerable to nihilism. This is where seduction begins. When everything is taken away, nothing is left-yet this equation is fundamentally false. The remainder never disappears, but it also never has autonomous reality. Everything real becomes residual when reduced to production.
Birth is residual without symbolic initiation. Death is residual without collective mourning. Value is residual when not reabsorbed in exchange cycles. Sexuality becomes residual as mere production of sexual relations. The social itself becomes residual once it's merely producing "social relations."
We must fight in this tactical universe of simulacrum-without hope but with defiance and fascination. Capital offers the spectacle of its decomposition, and we must become nomads in this desert of simulacra, with the veracity of living phantoms that capital has made of us. The crucial problem of humanity is the remainder-yet it's insoluble. All new freed energy leaves new remainder. All desire produces new repression.
We must push insane consumption to exterminate energy's concept itself. Once the last resource is consumed, the last indigenous person analyzed, the last commodity produced, we'll realize this spiral was merely a metaphysics of the remainder that will suddenly resolve in all its effects. Against the hegemonic system of neutrality and indifference, perhaps only appearances-the realm of seduction-remain invulnerable to the desert of meaning that surrounds us.
