The endurance of these achievements-even after the Emperor defeated Protestant princes and drove Luther's ruler from his electorate-was secured by the central and northern German city republics that maintained their Lutheran confessional identity in steadfast opposition to imperial authority. Luther's impact stemmed from extraordinary personal qualities and two decisive talents: exceptional media skills and political sensibilities. His command of language, creative imagery, and pulpit presence made him "a star of the first media age," enabling him to spread teachings through printers, painters, and artists to both educated elites and common people.
