When testimony comes from trusted sources (parents telling children their birth date) or appropriate experts (cartographers creating maps, scientists reporting research findings), it supplies knowledge. This view acknowledges our practical reliance on testimony while maintaining epistemic standards.
The direct view (or default view) treats testimony as a basic source of knowledge in its own right, not dependent on reasoning about reliability. When a knowledgeable person tells you something, you know it simply by understanding what they say. This view dates back to the Indian philosopher Aksapada Gautama (2nd century CE), who emphasized testimony isn't inference-we don't think "Lee is reliable, therefore what Lee says is true." Jennifer Lackey uses a "bucket brigade" metaphor-you can only pass on a full bucket of water if you have one.
