These ballistic missiles, carrying one-ton warheads designed to fragment into deadly shrapnel, were the most powerful weapons ever fired at US forces in twenty years of conflict. Despite the devastating attack creating thirty-foot craters and widespread destruction, miraculously no American troops were killed. President Trump tweeted simply: "All is well." In the tense aftermath, nervous Revolutionary Guard soldiers mistakenly shot down Ukrainian passenger jet Flight 752, killing all 176 people aboard. Though Iran initially claimed engine failure, they later admitted "human error" caused the launch of two Tor-M1 surface-to-air missiles. In essence, Soleimani had claimed his final victims.

Terror's New Frontier: The African Battleground

Three thousand miles south of the Middle East, Islamic State terrorism found a new stronghold in Africa. In Muatide, Mozambique, ISIS terrorists herded villagers onto a football pitch where they faced a horrific choice: join ISIS by beheading fellow villagers or be brutally executed themselves. By the time the terrorists left, fifty men and boys were hacked to pieces. This savagery was part of a broader pattern of Islamic extremism spreading across Africa. In Nigeria, Boko Haram (meaning "Western education is sinful") became one of the world's deadliest terrorist groups, killing nearly 7,000 people in 2014 alone. Their attacks on schools were particularly brutal-in February 2014, they murdered fifty-nine male students at Federal Government College in Buni Yadi while kidnapping female students. Two months later, they abducted 276 Christian schoolgirls from Chibok, forcing them to convert to Islam and selling them as "brides" for as little as $4 to $12 each. While Boko Haram eventually splintered into factions including the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP), the terrorist threat continued to grow across the continent. American Special Operations Forces now operate covertly in twenty-two African nations, with US Navy SEALs, Army Green Berets, and Marine Corps Raiders conducting "advise, assist, and accompany" missions at great personal risk, as evidenced by the death of Navy SEAL Kyle Milliken in Somalia in 2017. Niger, one of the world's poorest countries, became a particularly dangerous battleground, with ISIS, al-Qaeda, and Boko Haram controlling different regions in this lawless territory. This was one of the most hostile regions on the planet, with forty-six terror attacks in the last twenty months. The spread of terrorism to Africa demonstrated how the threat had evolved beyond its Middle Eastern origins. As one theater of operations was contained, extremists simply relocated to more vulnerable regions with weaker governance and security infrastructure. The war on terror had become truly global, requiring an increasingly sophisticated and coordinated international response. As former Navy SEAL Rory Larkin observed after working 448 hostage cases during his decade in the Middle East, the war on terror fundamentally came down to ideology. Terrorists were willing to die for their cause while Special Forces were willing to die for theirs. Despite his PTSD, Larkin maintained deep respect for the moral code of American special operators, who "carry the burden of the greatest generation" and would "never dream of strapping on a suicide vest to kill." The contrast between these opposing worldviews continues to define the ongoing struggle against terrorism-a conflict that shows no signs of ending as extremist ideologies adapt and spread to new regions, finding fertile ground in areas of instability, poverty, and weak governance across the globe.
