The industry traces back to the Great Depression when Jesse Jewell pioneered "contract farming" by selling chicks to farmers on credit and buying back mature birds. His vertically integrated model, controlling every production phase from hatching to marketing, became the industry standard.
For contract growers, the business is stressful and precarious. They face constant threats of contract termination while having little negotiating power. The chickens themselves endure miserable lives with virtually no legal protection. Selectively bred to reach unnatural sizes quickly, their growth rates have quadrupled over fifty years, with birds reaching slaughter weight in just seven weeks. This rapid growth causes severe health problems including leg disorders, heart disease, and sudden death syndrome.
In typical Georgia "grow houses," over 30,000 chickens are crammed together with each bird allocated floor space equivalent to a sheet of typing paper. Due to cramped conditions and obesity, many birds can barely walk. The slaughter process is equally grim, with workers grabbing up to seven chickens at a time at rates of 1,000 birds per hour.
The industry also inflicts suffering on its human workers, particularly the predominantly female and Latino workforce in the lowest-paid roles. Processing plant workers perform repetitive movements up to 30,000 times daily, making them fourteen times more likely to suffer repetitive strain injuries than other workers.
This industrial model isn't limited to America-it's how four out of five chickens are raised in Britain and has spread worldwide. However, consumer awareness is growing, with some supermarkets committing to higher welfare standards, improving conditions for millions of birds annually.

Deep in northeastern Argentina's forests, the last survivors of the once-feared Toba Qom tribe struggle for existence. The Qom represent just one group among many victims of factory farming's voracious appetite for land. Despite industry claims that factory farms save space, they actually consume vast amounts through "ghost acres"-land used to grow animal feed. Factory farming uses a third of the world's cropland for animal feed, with a third of global cereal harvest and 90% of soya meal going to livestock. Every year, forest equivalent to half the UK is cleared, largely for animal feed and cattle ranching.
Africa has become the new frontier for land-grabbers. The World Bank reported 45 million hectares acquired in 2009 alone, with an international conference estimating over 80 million hectares acquired in 2008-9-an area nearly twice the size of California. Western investment firms like Chayton Africa, led by former Goldman Sachs executive Neil Crowder, are acquiring vast tracts in countries like Zambia for crops like maize, soya and wheat. For these investors, African agriculture is merely "a new asset class" to exploit.
Ethiopia's government has enthusiastically sold 3 million hectares to foreign companies. In 2008, it signed a deal with Indian multinational Karuturi for 311,000 hectares-larger than Luxembourg. While officials claim these deals bring "huge benefits" including jobs and infrastructure, the reality has been disappointing. Local people report earning less than the World Bank's poverty threshold of $1.25 per day, with exploitation and child labor reportedly common.
Climate change further intensifies competition for land. At Titchwell RSPB bird reserve in Norfolk, rising sea levels threaten to submerge critical habitats. A two-degree temperature rise would bring a one-meter sea level rise, affecting 150 million people in coastal areas. With the UN predicting a near-doubling of global livestock populations, demand for feed crops will require an additional 2 million square kilometers of land by 2030-precisely the amount that would be lost to a two-degree warming.

At an Argentine cattle ranch, a wealthy rancher with expensive shoes and luxury watch manages his $10 million feedlot operation fattening 4,000 cattle in conditions designed to maximize profit. While his animals live on mud patches, his most fertile fields grow GM soya beans-"where the real money is." This soya, largely unknown to consumers, feeds factory-farmed animals across Europe and China, with Argentina producing nearly a fifth of the world's supply on 18 million hectares.
Driving from Buenos Aires to Rosario, I was dismayed to find the iconic pampas reduced to a monotonous landscape of endless soya fields-no villages, no farmhouses, just scrubby crops and advertising for pesticides. The mighty Parana River has become an industrial shipping canal, with enormous tankers loading soya for export. From our boat, we witnessed massive factories pouring avalanches of soya meal into ship containers, with dust billowing over us as we passed.
The human cost of Argentina's soya boom is staggering. Since Argentina embraced GM soya in 1996, chemical usage has exploded from 35 million liters annually to 300 million by 2010-nearly ten times pre-GM levels. According to Physicians in the Crop-Sprayed Towns, 12 million Argentinians are affected by these agrotoxins annually, with rising rates of birth defects and stillbirths.
In San Jorge, we met doctor Daniel Vezenasi, who revealed higher rates of miscarriage, birth defects, and hypothyroidism in sprayed communities. We also met Viviana Peralta, whose baby Aileen nearly died during aerial spraying. Though Peralta won a court order banning spraying over her property, the ruling absurdly applied only to her home, leaving neighbors exposed.
Argentina's shift to industrial farming has brought feedlots that mirror America's factory farm model. We met Pablo and Pilar Guerra, whose farm shop business had been devastated since a feedlot was built nearby. The smell, flies, and rats had cut their income in half. Despite organizing community meetings and pursuing complaints through every government level, their five-year battle proved futile.
Miguel Martinez shared a similar heartbreak. A civil servant nearing retirement, he had inherited land from his grandparents where he planned to build his retirement home. The dream was shattered when the neighboring field became a feedlot. Though not against progress, Martinez lamented: "Four thousand cows on one field is too many, and the consequences are far-reaching. Small farmers cannot compete; the water supply is polluted; the air is bad. For investors, it's just money, but farming is not the same as working in the car industry; or owning parking lots. It's an art, and a responsibility."

The Petroleum-Food Connection: Running on Empty
Modern industrial farming has become essentially a process of converting petroleum into food. Conventional crop production in America consumes the equivalent of 6.3 barrels of oil per hectare, with two-thirds used for petrochemicals like fertilizers and pesticides. One tonne of US maize-a staple feed crop for intensive livestock-requires a full barrel of oil to produce.
As conventional oil sources deplete, prices inevitably rise. The International Energy Agency has declared "the age of cheap oil is over," with production from existing fields already in decline. This reality threatens the economic viability of industrial farming, which accounts for 7% of America's entire energy usage.
Water crises are becoming increasingly common in developed nations. In 2006, London faced such severe shortages that authorities considered importing water from Scotland and Scandinavia by sea tanker, towing Arctic icebergs up the Thames, or even "cloud seeding" to create artificial rain. Worldwide, over 15,000 major desalination plants now exist, primarily in water-stressed regions.
Australia's Murray-Darling Basin exemplifies the political battles over dwindling freshwater. This vital river system, which irrigates farmland producing 30% of the nation's agriculture, has been overexploited for decades. By 1994, human activity was consuming 77% of its annual flow, causing the river mouth to silt up, water to become salty, and toxic algal blooms to spread along 1,000 kilometers.
This pattern repeats globally-seventy major rivers including the Colorado, Ganges, Nile and Tigris-Euphrates are near maximum extraction levels. Groundwater is being depleted faster than it can be replenished across the Middle East, North Africa, parts of Asia and Europe. The UN FAO identifies agriculture as the primary culprit, with livestock production playing a key role.
China's growing meat consumption has caused a 3.4-fold increase in per-person water requirements for food since the 1960s, becoming the "main cause" of worsening water scarcity there. With the global livestock population predicted to nearly double by 2050, water demands will increase dramatically unless we shift away from industrial farming.

The Illusion of Cheap Food
For people like Annabel Abram, who survives on 23 weekly for food for herself and her husband in Edinburgh, factory farming seems to offer affordable options. Yet the reality is that factory farming drives up global food prices by requiring enormous quantities of grain and soya for animal feed.
Weather extremes have devastated harvests worldwide. A scorching 2010 summer destroyed 2 million square kilometers of crops across Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. France and Germany suffered their driest spring in almost a century in 2011. Droughts hit Australia, America and Africa, causing bread prices in Lusaka, Zambia to surge 75% in just seven months.
The insatiable demand for grain and soya to feed billions of factory-farmed animals means a third of the world's cereal harvest and 90% of its soya now feeds livestock rather than people. Combined with land diverted to biofuels, this creates dangerous competition between crops for people, livestock, and cars.
Experts agree this crisis will worsen. Oxfam warned that increased grain demand for livestock will push food prices "beyond the limits of affordability" for the poorest. The UK government's Foresight unit predicted prices of major crops will rise "perhaps dramatically" over the next forty decades. Hunger has already triggered political instability, including the Arab Spring of 2011 where bread shortages sparked initial unrest.
If cereals fed to factory-farmed animals went directly to humans instead, they could feed 3 billion people. The inefficiency is staggering-producing 1kg of edible beef requires 20kg of feed, while pork and chicken require 7.3kg and 4.5kg respectively.
Asian environmentalist Chandran Nair argues that the true cost of a $4 burger, including externalities, is "something like $100." He warns that Asia's projected meat consumption increase to 200 billion birds annually by 2050 would cause ecological collapse.
Factory farming's false promise has spread to developing countries with devastating consequences. Studies reveal that intensive livestock projects often fail to understand how rural communities actually use livestock-not primarily as commercial products, but as assets, insurance, and for non-market services.

The GM Dilemma: Promise or Peril?
German scientist Ingo Potrykus has spent over a decade fighting to bring his life's work-Golden Rice-to the world's poorest children. This genetically modified rice contains beta-carotene, which the body converts to Vitamin A, potentially preventing 1-2 million deaths annually and saving 500,000 children from blindness. Around 124 million people in 118 developing countries suffer from Vitamin A deficiency, including over 90 million children in Southeast Asia alone.
Despite being developed in 1999, Golden Rice has remained stuck in laboratories while awaiting regulatory approval. Potrykus and his collaborator Peter Beyer donated the technology rather than profiting from it, motivated by humanitarian concerns.
Critics raise concerns about unintended consequences of genetic modification, and some scientists worry it could actually worsen malnutrition by discouraging dietary diversity. Professor Klaus Becker warns it might "encourage a diet based on a single industrial staple food rather than upon the reintroduction of many vitamin-rich food plants."
While Golden Rice languishes in regulatory limbo, other GM crops have spread widely-13.3 million farmers in twenty-five countries were growing them on 125 million hectares by 2008, with 90 percent being smallholders in developing nations. Most common modifications create herbicide tolerance and insect resistance, but these broad-spectrum pesticides destroy beneficial insects that naturally control pests.
Despite claims of feeding the world, GM technology primarily supports factory farming. The "big four" GM crops-corn, soya, cotton and rapeseed-are predominantly used for animal feed. About half the world's corn and over 90 percent of soya beans feed farm animals, with North America leading in GM feed production.
The ancient practice of saving seeds has been criminalized through patents on GM seeds. Since the US Supreme Court's 1980 ruling allowing seed patents, American farmers growing GM crops must buy new seeds yearly or face prosecution.
In Eagleville, Missouri, shopkeeper Gary Rinehart experienced this firsthand when a Monsanto investigator wrongly accused him of patent violation. After surveillance by private detectives and legal battles, Monsanto eventually dropped the case-it was mistaken identity, with his nephew Tim being the actual target.

After our tense encounter with authorities, we were surprised when Muyuan farm officials unexpectedly joined us for dinner. Chen revealed Muyuan produced a million pigs annually and planned to expand to nine million by 2017-equivalent to Britain's entire pig industry. Despite our evidence of environmental damage, we smiled and listened.
The next morning, we visited the farm officially but weren't allowed to see any animals despite offers to follow biosecurity protocols. The Deputy General Manager, Tian Fangping, explained their twenty-year growth from twenty-two sows to today's massive operation. He confirmed they use the same cruel sow stalls and farrowing crates we'd seen elsewhere. With 10 million profit in just half of 2011, preferential government loans, and $10 million from the International Finance Corporation, money wasn't limiting their expansion.
Though they wouldn't show us existing pigs, they proudly toured us through their new farm-a post-apocalyptic complex with rows of half-built white buildings housing thousands of empty steel pens. The Western-designed facility was so automated that one stockman could "care for" 3,000 pigs.
We next visited Lake Taihu near Wuxi, where intensive farming's consequences were evident. The lake, which supplies water to millions, had become so polluted by 2007 that tap water ran cloudy with a foul smell. Despite government clean-up efforts, we found bright green algal blooms along the shore-caused by nitrates from fertilizers and manure.
On our final day, we investigated a smaller pig farm near a river feeding into Lake Taihu. Though modest in size with about a hundred pigs, it was still a factory operation with animals in barren conditions. Sows were crammed into tiny stalls, one so large she couldn't fit properly, her suffering palpable. The farmer admitted they disposed of waste directly into the river, bribing local officials to look the other way. Most alarming was their haphazard use of antibiotics without veterinary guidance-bottles and needles piled near the kitchen, administered prophylactically despite having no medical training.

Consumer Power: Creating Change Through Choices
The EU's battery cage ban implementation reveals the complex reality of animal welfare reform. Taking twelve years to implement, with many countries missing the 2012 deadline, it highlighted the challenges of large-scale agricultural change. The new "enriched" cages, while marginally better, still fall far short of meaningful welfare improvements. These cages provide hens merely a postcard-sized area of extra space with basic perches and scratching areas, while maintaining the fundamental problems: uncomfortable sloping wire floors, artificial lighting, and complete isolation from natural environments. A typical hen still spends her entire life without ever seeing daylight or experiencing natural behaviors.
Consumer opinion has emerged as an increasingly powerful catalyst for change in animal welfare practices. Comprehensive research across European markets demonstrates striking levels of consumer concern: approximately three-quarters of consumers in the UK and France consider animal welfare a crucial factor in their purchasing decisions, with even higher percentages in Hungary (82%), Sweden (85%), Norway (84%), and Italy (87%). This shifting consumer consciousness has forced major food companies to fundamentally reconsider their supply chains and product offerings.
The corporate response has been significant and widespread. Nearly 500 major companies have made public commitments to animal welfare improvements. Subway, Starbucks, Sainsbury's, and McDonald's have all pledged to transition to cage-free eggs, with specific timelines for implementation. Other companies have focused on dairy welfare - ASDA and Ben & Jerry's have committed to sourcing milk exclusively from grass-fed cows, while Waitrose and Marks & Spencer have consistently competed for the "most compassionate supermarket" title through comprehensive animal welfare policies across their product ranges.
Creative activism has proven particularly effective in accelerating change. The "Hetty the hen" campaign exemplifies successful pressure tactics, targeting Tesco's misleading "country fresh" egg labels. Activists dressed as six-foot disheveled battery hens visited stores with shopping trolleys, creating memorable public spectacles. It advocates for mandatory method-of-production labeling across all animal products, emphasizing clear, straightforward language over confusing symbols or microscopic print. This campaign highlights the essential connection between consumer awareness and meaningful welfare improvements, arguing that informed choices drive market change.

Toward a Sustainable Food Future
The EU disposes of millions of tonnes of valuable food waste while importing 40 million tonnes of livestock feed from South America annually. Reducing this waste would help restore the natural order in food production.
Forward-thinking scientists like Willem Brandenburg and Rene Wijffels at Wageningen University are exploring alternatives. Brandenburg's seaweed farming could potentially feed the protein requirements of ten billion people using just 360,000 square kilometers of ocean-four times the size of Portugal. Wijffels heads the university's "Algae Park," developing algae as protein and biofuel sources that could replace imported soya for animal feed by 2025.
Laboratory-produced meat represents another frontier. Professor Mark Post's $200,000 artificial beef burger, funded by Google's Sergey Brin, demonstrated the concept's potential. Bill Gates believes innovation in meat production has "tremendous market potential," as traditional methods can't sustainably meet projected demand.
Factory farms waste food rather than make it. For every 6 kilograms of plant protein fed to livestock, only 1 kilogram returns as animal protein for humans. Reducing grain fed to farm animals by half would create a more sensible food system where both cereals and meat could be produced more effectively.
The solution requires rearing ruminants like cattle and sheep on pasture rather than in sheds, converting inedible plant life into food through grazing on mixed farms or marginal lands. We must end feeding grain to confined cattle and redirect fish to human consumption rather than livestock feed, as up to a third of fish caught globally becomes animal feed rather than human food.
Reducing food waste presents another opportunity-North America and Europe waste enough food to feed the world's billion undernourished people three to seven times over. Food is wasted throughout the supply chain from farms to homes. In the UK alone, households waste meat equivalent to 50 million chickens, 1.5 million pigs and 100,000 beef cattle annually.
Each of us has three opportunities daily to support a better food system through our choices. Celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall emphasizes the connection between animal welfare and food quality: "You see the difference on the plate, you taste the difference, and you feel the difference in your body." Compassionate consumerism can transform farming while providing wonderful food.
The key principles are: buy foods from farms, not factories; reduce waste by loving leftovers; and maintain a balanced diet without excessive meat consumption. Look for labels like free-range, pasture-raised, outdoor-reared or organic. Ruminants (sheep and cattle) offer the most sustainable meat and dairy options as they convert grass into food.
