Yet for Carroll, these qualities aren't about being adult but about maintaining adventure. Like Plato, who saw philosophy as requiring youthful eros and energy, Carroll suggests wonder belongs to childhood. The lament at the end of Through the Looking-Glass implies that growing up means leaving wonderland behind. While Carroll's work fits into the Socratic tradition of using nonsense to shape moral identity, there's danger in taking nonsense too far. The absurdist literature of Kafka, Gogol, and Ionesco may produce classics, but as works like Kafka's unfinished "The Trial" delve deeper into senseless strife, life and death themselves become almost meaningless. Nonsense becomes dangerous when you lose an Alice-like character who maintains sane goodness and self-control amid absurdities. If you fall into a Rabbit-Hole, better hope you're with Alice!
