Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a Russian novelist and thinker whose work explored psychology, morality, faith, and social turmoil. His major novels include Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, The Idiot, and Notes from Underground. Widely translated and globally studied, he remains one of literature’s most influential novelists.
Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow in 1821, the son of a doctor who worked at a hospital for the poor, and he grew up in a household shaped by both religious feeling and exposure to hardship. After his mother’s death and his father’s decline, he was sent to St. Petersburg to study at the Nikolaev Military Engineering Institute. He completed the program but felt drawn less to engineering than to literature, philosophy, and translation. His first major breakthrough came in 1846 with Poor Folk, a novel that immediately attracted attention for its sympathy toward the urban poor and its psychological sensitivity. Early praise established him as a promising young writer, but his career soon took a dramatic turn.
