Christopher Hitchens was a British-American author, journalist, and literary critic noted for his provocative writing on politics, religion, and literature. His influential works include “God Is Not Great,” “The Missionary Position,” and “Hitch-22.” Renowned for his incisive public debates and polemics, Hitchens shaped contemporary intellectual discourse worldwide.
Christopher Eric Hitchens emerged as one of the most widely recognized and controversial public intellectuals of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Born in Portsmouth, England, in 1949, Hitchens grew up in a family shaped by his father's naval career and his mother's ambition for her children to rise through education. He attended The Leys School in Cambridge and then studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Balliol College, Oxford, where he became involved with the International Socialists, foreshadowing his initial commitment to radical politics.
