Les moines considéraient l'océan Atlantique comme un équivalent du désert, s'inspirant des ascètes d'Égypte qui s'isolaient dans le sable pour trouver Dieu. En s'installant sur ce rocher escarpé à 12 kilomètres des côtes, ils recherchaient un isolement radical et une forme de pénitence permanente. Ils y vivaient dans des cabanes en pierre sèches appelées "beehive huts" et subsistaient grâce à la pêche, aux oiseaux de mer et à un petit jardin potager situé entre les deux pics de l'île.
Le fort de Staigue est une structure circulaire massive datant de la fin de l'âge du fer, vers 300 ou 400 après J.-C. Sa particularité réside dans sa construction en pierres sèches, sans aucun mortier, avec des murs atteignant 4 mètres d'épaisseur et plus de 5 mètres de haut. L'intérieur du fort révèle une grande complexité architecturale, comprenant des systèmes d'escaliers en forme de X et des chambres cachées directement dans l'épaisseur des murs, servant probablement de centre de pouvoir tribal et de protection pour le bétail.
L'Ogham est le premier alphabet irlandais, utilisé principalement entre le 4e et le 7e siècle. Il se présente sous la forme d'encoches gravées sur des piliers de pierre, ressemblant à des codes-barres géants. Ces inscriptions servaient généralement à marquer des limites de territoires ou à commémorer des défunts. Sur certains sites comme Kilmalkedar, on peut observer la transition culturelle de l'Irlande, car des croix chrétiennes ont parfois été ajoutées plus tard sur ces mêmes pierres druidiques.
Valentia Island a été le site de pose du tout premier câble télégraphique transatlantique en 1866. Cette innovation technologique a révolutionné les échanges mondiaux en permettant des communications quasi instantanées entre l'Europe et l'Amérique, alors qu'il fallait auparavant plusieurs semaines pour traverser l'océan par bateau. L'île est ainsi devenue un point stratégique majeur à la pointe du progrès technique au 19e siècle.
Le séjour de la reine Victoria à Muckross House en 1861 a véritablement lancé le tourisme de masse dans la région de Killarney. Pour l'accueillir, la famille Herbert a lourdement investi dans la décoration des 65 pièces du manoir et l'aménagement des jardins, créant des sites emblématiques comme le point de vue "Ladies View". Cependant, ces dépenses somptueuses ont fini par ruiner la famille propriétaire, illustrant le contraste entre le faste victorien et les réalités économiques de l'époque.
