Les bâtisseurs du 5ème siècle choisissaient et emboîtaient chaque roche de manière à ce que le poids de l'ensemble stabilise la structure. Pour éviter l'écroulement, les murs ne sont pas verticaux mais présentent une inclinaison, s'élargissant vers la base pour mieux répartir la pression. À Staigue Fort, les murs atteignent ainsi quatre mètres d'épaisseur à leur base, garantissant une stabilité qui défie le temps.
Daniel O’Connell, surnommé le « Libérateur », était un avocat et homme politique irlandais du 19ème siècle célèbre pour avoir obtenu l'Émancipation des Catholiques en 1829. Il est respecté pour avoir mené ce combat de manière pacifique par la force de ses discours lors de rassemblements géants. Sa résidence d'été à Derrynane est aujourd'hui un musée situé dans un parc national protégé, offrant un aperçu de sa vie privée et de l'histoire irlandaise, le tout dans un cadre naturel exceptionnel influencé par le Gulf Stream.
L'accès à Abbey Island est une véritable course contre la montre car l'île n'est accessible à pied que par une bande de sable à marée basse. Il est impératif de consulter les horaires des marées avant de s'y rendre pour ne pas rester coincé sur l'île jusqu'au cycle suivant. Une fois sur place, la vigilance est de mise car les sentiers sont étroits et les rochers peuvent être glissants, particulièrement pour les jeunes enfants explorant les ruines de l'abbaye et son vieux cimetière.
Il est fortement recommandé de parcourir la route dans le sens inverse des aiguilles d'une montre. Cette astuce logistique permet d'éviter de se retrouver face aux nombreux bus de tourisme qui circulent tous dans le sens horaire. Étant donné que les routes secondaires et les "boreens" sont extrêmement étroites, suivre ce sens de circulation réduit considérablement le stress de la conduite et facilite les croisements avec les autres véhicules.
L'île de Valentia abrite l'une des traces de vie terrestre les plus anciennes au monde : des empreintes de tétrapodes fossilisées. Ces ancêtres des dinosaures ont laissé leurs marques dans la roche il y a environ 350 millions d'années, au moment où les premiers animaux sortaient de l'eau. En plus de ce trésor géologique, l'île propose la visite d'une ancienne carrière d'ardoise monumentale et d'un phare historique bâti sur les vestiges d'un fort de l'époque de Cromwell.
