Les moines cherchaient ce qu'ils appelaient le "désert dans l'océan", un isolement total pour se consacrer pleinement à leur foi. La solitude extrême était considérée comme le chemin le plus court vers Dieu. Pour survivre sur ce rocher escarpé, ils devaient monter et descendre quotidiennement 618 marches en pierre pour pêcher et chasser des oiseaux de mer, qui constituaient leur régime de base avec le poisson.
Ces structures sont construites selon la technique de la pierre sèche, c'est-à-dire sans aucun mortier pour lier les pierres entre elles. Les cabanes de Skellig Michael, appelées clochans, ont une forme de ruche, tandis que l'Oratoire de Gallarus ressemble à un bateau renversé. Bien que traditionnellement datés du haut Moyen Âge, certains experts comme Christian Lassure suggèrent que ces techniques ont été utilisées pendant des millénaires et que certains édifices pourraient avoir été construits ou remaniés beaucoup plus tard, parfois même jusqu'au 17e ou 18e siècle.
Surnommé "Le Libérateur", Daniel O'Connell est la figure politique majeure de l'Irlande du 19e siècle. Il a lutté pour les droits des catholiques et a obtenu l'émancipation catholique en 1829. Sa maison familiale, Derrynane House, est située dans le Kerry près de Caherdaniel. Le Staigue Fort est une forteresse circulaire datant de l'âge du fer (vers 300 ou 400 après J.-C.). C'est un chef-d'œuvre d'ingénierie primitive avec des murs de 5,5 mètres de haut et 4 mètres d'épaisseur, construits sans mortier. Il servait probablement de résidence à un roi local et de symbole de puissance. L'intérieur est remarquable pour ses escaliers en forme de X intégrés directement dans l'épaisseur des murs, permettant d'accéder aux remparts pour la défense.
