John Ernst Steinbeck (1902-1968) est l'auteur de Tortilla Flat, lauréat des prix Nobel et Pulitzer, et une figure imposante de la littérature américaine. Né à Salinas, en Californie, Steinbeck s'est inspiré de sa connaissance intime des diverses communautés de la région pour façonner ce roman comique de 1935 célébrant la vie des paisanos mexicano-américains à Monterey.

Le livre a marqué son premier succès populaire, introduisant les lecteurs à son style caractéristique : un humour doux, des décors californiens vivants et des portraits compatissants de personnages de la classe ouvrière en marge de la société.
