Wallace Stegner (1909-1993), salué comme « le doyen des écrivains de l'Ouest », était l'auteur lauréat du prix Pulitzer de Crossing to Safety (En lieu sûr), son dernier roman et best-seller explorant les liens durables de l'amitié à travers les décennies. Publiée en 1987, cette fiction littéraire semi-autobiographique examine les thèmes de la loyauté, du mariage, de l'ambition et des compromis qu'exige la vie à travers le portrait intime de deux couples dont les vies s'entrelacent de 1937 jusque dans les années 1970.

La prestigieuse carrière de six décennies de Stegner a produit plus de deux douzaines d'ouvrages de fiction, d'histoire et de biographie. Il a remporté le prix Pulitzer pour Angle of Repose (Angle de repos) et le National Book Award pour The Spectator Bird, tout en fondant le prestigieux programme d'écriture créative de l'Université de Stanford. Au-delà de la littérature, Stegner était un militant écologiste pionnier dont la Wilderness Letter de 1960 a aidé à établir le Système national de préservation de la nature sauvage (National Wilderness Preservation System).
