Richard Bachman est le nom de plume que Stephen King a adopté en 1977 pour publier Marche ou crève et d'autres romans plus sombres et plus rudes en dehors de sa marque principale. King a créé le pseudonyme Bachman pour tester si son succès découlait de son talent ou de la reconnaissance de son nom, publiant délibérément ces thrillers dystopiques avec un marketing minimal.

Marche ou crève, une histoire de survie brutale mettant en scène des adolescents forcés de participer à un concours de marche mortel par un régime totalitaire, illustre le ton caractéristique de Bachman — cynique, désespéré et sans concession. King a initialement écrit le roman à l'université pendant l'ère de la guerre du Vietnam, canalisant le cynisme de la jeunesse dans cette exploration sombre de l'endurance et de la nature humaine.

Avant que son identité ne soit révélée en 1985 par un commis de librairie ayant remarqué des similitudes stylistiques, King a publié sept romans sous le nom de Bachman, dont Running Man, La Peau sur les os et Rage.
