Jeanne DuPrau est l'auteure acclamée de La Cité de l'Ombre et une voix pionnière de la science-fiction dystopique pour jeunes adultes. Née en 1944 à San Francisco, en Californie, DuPrau s'appuie sur son expérience d'enseignante, d'éditrice et de rédactrice technique pour façonner des mondes post-apocalyptiques complexes qui explorent les thèmes de la survie, de l'ingéniosité et de l'espoir face à l'effondrement de la société. Ses récits, profondément documentés, reflètent ses travaux documentaires variés sur des sujets tels que le clonage, la biologie cellulaire et l'histoire américaine.

La Cité de l'Ombre, publié en 2003, a lancé la série des Livres d'Ember, qui s'est poursuivie avec Le Peuple d'en haut, La Prophétesse de Yonwood et Le Diamant de l'Ombre. DuPrau a également écrit Car Trouble et Project F, en plus de contribuer à la série multiplateforme Voyagers. Elle détient une licence en littérature anglaise du Scripps College et vit à Menlo Park, en Californie, où elle aime jardiner et jouer du piano.

La Cité de l'Ombre a été adapté en un film majeur en 2008, mettant en vedette Bill Murray et Saoirse Ronan, consolidant ainsi l'influence de DuPrau sur la littérature contemporaine pour jeunes adultes.
