Né le 5 juin 1964 à San Antonio, au Texas, Riordan a enseigné l'anglais et les sciences sociales au collège pendant quinze ans avant de devenir écrivain à plein temps.

Il a créé l'univers de Percy Jackson sous forme d'histoires du soir pour son fils Haley, atteint de TDAH et de dyslexie — ce qui l'a inspiré à façonner des héros qui transforment les troubles de l'apprentissage en forces de demi-dieux. Le Sang de l'Olympe conclut sa série Héros de l'Olympe, mêlant les mythologies grecque et romaine à l'aventure moderne.

Avant sa percée dans la littérature jeunesse, Riordan a écrit la série de polars primée Tres Navarre pour adultes, remportant les prix Shamus, Anthony et Edgar. Son œuvre a été adaptée en films à succès, en une comédie musicale de Broadway nommée aux Tony Awards, et en une série Disney+ dont il est le producteur exécutif.
