David Foster Wallace (1962–2008) était un romancier et essayiste postmoderne de renom. Il est l'auteur de String Theory, un recueil explorant le tennis comme un prisme pour examiner la culture contemporaine, l'obsession humaine et la rigueur intellectuelle.

Wallace a bâti sa réputation littéraire grâce à des œuvres défiant les genres comme Infinite Jest — un roman tentaculaire de 1996 classé parmi les 100 meilleurs romans de langue anglaise par le magazine Time — et des recueils d'essais tels que A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again. Il était connu pour sa prose maximaliste et ses récits truffés de notes de bas de page.

Diplômé en philosophie et en anglais de l'Amherst College, où il a écrit son premier roman The Broom of the System en guise de thèse, Wallace a ensuite enseigné l'écriture créative à l'Illinois State University et au Pomona College. Il a reçu une « bourse de génie » de la Fondation MacArthur en 1997.

Son ouvrage posthume The Pale King (2011) a été finaliste du prix Pulitzer, cimentant son héritage pour sa capacité à disséquer l'aliénation moderne à travers une narration à l'humour noir et à la structure inventive.
