Jefferson wrote with fluid, lyrical prose while Adams deployed words like weapons, producing memorable epigrammatic flashes. Their first significant eruption occurred in June 1813 when Adams protested Jefferson's characterization of him as a retrograde thinker. This moment transformed their correspondence from posed patriarchal exchanges into a genuine argument about their competing visions of the revolutionary legacy. Their major argument in 1813-1814 concerned social equality and the role of elites in the American republic. Adams agreed with Jefferson that the distinction between "the few and the many" was ancient, but diverged on the inevitability of aristocracy. Adams insisted aristocracy was ordained by God in human nature-philosophers could only control it, never eliminate it. Jefferson countered with two crucial distinctions: between a "natural aristocracy" based on "virtue and talents" versus an artificial "pseudo-aristocracy" of wealth and birth, and between Europe's feudal system and America's more egalitarian society. Both Adams and Jefferson anticipated the coming sectional crisis between North and South. "I fear there will be greater difficulties to preserve our Union," Adams warned, "than You and I, our Fathers Brothers Disciples and Sons have had to form it." This touched on the most explosive issue of all-slavery-which remained largely a forbidden topic in their correspondence by mutual consent. The emotional bond between the two patriots was fully restored in their final years. Their correspondence allowed them to confront and argue out their different notions of the history they had made together. By 1823, even the subject of political scandal had become a nostalgic joke, with Adams teasing Jefferson about a rumored collection of newspaper slips defaming him, wishing he had thought to make a similar collection of his own. As the fiftieth anniversary of Independence Day approached, both men received numerous requests to share their wisdom about the revolution's meaning. Though gravely ill, Jefferson summoned his eloquence one final time, crafting a letter that portrayed the American Revolution as the opening shot in a global liberation movement destined to sweep away all forms of oppression. Adams, characteristically more grounded, offered a terse toast-"INDEPENDENCE FOREVER"-and warned that the American experiment remained contingent, its future "the brightest or blackest page" depending on how its political institutions evolved. In a final act that seemed divinely orchestrated, both founders died on July 4, 1826-exactly fifty years after the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson slipped into a coma on July 3rd, asking "Is it the Fourth?" before dying shortly after noon on Independence Day. Adams collapsed that same morning and died around five-thirty in the afternoon, his last words acknowledging his old friend: "Thomas Jefferson survives." Though factually incorrect in that moment, Adams was right for posterity-Jefferson's more providential vision of American destiny would triumph in the nation's historical memory, just as Adams had predicted it would.
