Allan W. Eckert (1931–2011) est l'auteur acclamé de The Frontiersmen et un historien et naturaliste de renom, spécialisé dans l'histoire de la frontière américaine et les récits d'histoire naturelle. Ce récit historique, le premier de sa célèbre série en six volumes Winning of America, relate la colonisation de la vallée de l'Ohio à travers des comptes rendus méticuleusement documentés qui allient précision historique et narration captivante.

Né à Buffalo, dans l'État de New York, Eckert a écrit plus de 40 livres et a été nommé huit fois pour le prix Pulitzer tout au long de sa brillante carrière. Son expertise s'étendait au-delà de l'écriture, incluant la rédaction de 225 épisodes pour la série Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, récompensée par un Emmy Award.
