The rise of female Islamic teachers in Syria emerged as an unexpected consequence of the government's brutal repression following the 1982 Hama uprising. While men suspected of Islamist activity faced imprisonment and torture, the government couldn't risk similar treatment of women without public outcry. This created an opening for groups like the secretive Qubaisi sisterhood, which effectively utilized the additional freedom and privacy afforded to women in conservative Islamic society.
By 2006, the Qubaisi sisterhood reportedly had 75,000 members with affiliated schools in Syria and offshoots in other countries. Members meet in private homes to study Islamic texts under senior unmarried women called "anisehs" or "misses." The sisterhood has a distinctive dress code where headscarf colors indicate rank-white for beginners, navy blue for more advanced members, and black for those in excellent standing.
The sisterhood offered significant social advancement opportunities in a country with few such avenues for women. Members included women from Syria's most powerful families, yet the group also recruited promising young women from disadvantaged backgrounds. Benefits included arranged marriages into wealthier circles, job opportunities, and the empowerment that comes from religious education. As one woman explained, "It's only ignorant women who are bullied by men in the name of Islam. When girls have the ability to read the Qur'an and interpret it, they will be able to find their own meanings."

Shortly after her marriage to Fawaz, her older brother Faiez entered their apartment with a stolen key and stabbed her five times, nearly severing her spinal column. He then walked to the police station and turned himself in, claiming he'd killed his sister to restore family honor after she lost her virginity out of wedlock ten months earlier. "It's true that my sister is married now, but we never washed away the shame," he told police.
What made Zahra's case remarkable wasn't just her youth or innocence, but that it became a rallying point for legal reform. Her story drew statements from religious leaders including Syria's grand mufti and sparked media coverage. Activists explained that honor killings had become more prevalent as other forms of honor collapsed in Syrian society. Gender segregation creates a situation where unmarried women speak about men as if they're a different species. At one gathering Zoepf attended, girls were intensely curious about Alia's "showfa"-the traditional "viewing" where a suitor sees his potential bride without her abaya. Alia described her unplanned showfa with Badr, explaining she had no time to prepare when her father approved the match on the spot. Like many Saudi women, she recounted being so nervous she nearly dropped the juice tray she was carrying.
Despite Western media focus on incremental changes in Saudi Arabia, most young Saudis Zoepf met were deeply conservative and uninterested in social reforms. Young women were acutely aware of societal limitations but rarely questioned them, citing their deep faith in Saudi Arabia's strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islam. They debated minor details like whether male cousins should see their faces or if men could be Facebook friends, but most viewed pre-engagement conversations with men as horrifying.
Most Saudi women strongly preferred family involvement in marriage arrangements. One young woman couldn't imagine choosing her own husband unless her family was dysfunctional, saying "My mother knows that I don't want someone from a very low background. When your mother knows you well, it is easier for her to make a good choice."
Despite their conservative values, Saudi girls maintained intense female friendships that provided crucial support in their gender-segregated world. However, as one Saudi saleswoman revealed, these vital friendships often disappeared after marriage: "Before we get married, we have each other... But for ninety percent of women here, female friends are something that you have only in childhood."

Traditional Arab culture highly values protecting unmarried daughters, with even allowing them to work locally sometimes questioning their virtue. Even liberal families that permit daughters to work and study near home often find it unthinkable to allow them to travel overseas unaccompanied.
Randa's story exemplifies this new path. Her rebellion was forced upon her when her mother's suicide led her devout Sunni extended family to cut ties with her at seventeen. At nineteen, she applied to be a Gulf Air flight attendant, enduring a humiliating selection process where recruiters scrutinized women's bodies, skin, and emotional resilience. Despite never having flown before, Randa seized this opportunity, recognizing it as her path to freedom: "When I was still at home in Aleppo, I never knew what opportunity would come to me, but I knew that I would take it... And also I knew that it wouldn't be my marriage."
The Gulf offers young Arab women something rarely found in their home countries: workplaces with transparent advancement patterns and relatively little corruption or nepotism. For Suzanne Saoub, a Jordanian who left her home country after male colleagues complained about having a female supervisor, the Gulf's meritocratic environment proved liberating. "In Jordan, if the office finds out that a woman has a boyfriend, it can be the end of her career," she explained. "It's amazing to come here and find that people only care about how you do your job."
As these pioneering women return home, family dynamics often shift dramatically, especially when daughters begin outearning fathers and brothers. Women raised to value community now see themselves as individuals with personal rights and freedoms, creating friction within traditional family structures. Yet many find themselves treated as heroines by female relatives eager to hear about their travels.

Hessah al-Sheikh, one of the 1990 driving protesters, comes from a family of renowned religious scholars including Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, founder of Wahhabism. Though her father encouraged her education and ambitions, her participation in the driving protest was painful for her family. "My father said, 'I wanted you to drive and to have that right, but I didn't want you to be the first.'"
The growing openness has sparked backlash from some Saudi women themselves. Rowdha Yousef launched "My Guardian Knows What's Best for Me" after another activist attempted to cross the Saudi-Bahrain border without male permission. Within two months, Yousef collected 5,400 signatures rejecting "ignorant requests of those inciting liberty" and demanding punishment for those promoting gender equality.
In Egypt, the Arab Spring initially seemed to promise new freedoms for women. Egyptian women's participation in the revolution directly challenged traditional gender roles. Many young women described watching protests from their windows before finally joining the marchers, sometimes even persuading their mothers to come along. For eighteen days during the uprising, sexual harassment virtually disappeared from Tahrir Square, giving women like twenty-year-old Hadir Ahmedali her first taste of gender equality.
However, the atmosphere of respect female protesters experienced during the early days of the 2011 revolution quickly vanished. Sexual harassment and assaults increased dramatically after Mubarak's security forces disappeared from the streets. Several Islamist lawmakers publicly blamed women for these attacks, suggesting they brought them upon themselves by participating in protests.
Most disturbingly, the Egyptian military used brutal tactics against female protesters, subjecting them to humiliating "virginity tests" and other forms of torture. Samira Ibrahim Mohamed, a young woman from Sohag, was arrested while protesting near Tahrir Square in March 2011. She endured a humiliating forced "virginity test" that she described as torture so severe "I wished to die six hundred times." Despite the stigma attached to such cases, Samira pursued legal action against the military council, becoming nationally famous with a Facebook page, "We are all Samira Ibrahim," attracting thousands of supporters.

Reem Asaad, a finance lecturer at Dar al-Hekma women's college in Jeddah, launched a campaign for lingerie shops to replace male staff with women. Rather than emphasizing women's rights, she strategically appealed to traditional Saudi values, arguing that no decent Saudi woman should have to discuss intimate apparel with strange men.
In June 2011, King Abdullah issued a ruling banning men from working in lingerie shops, ordering these jobs be given to Saudi women instead. The Ministry of Labor expanded this to include shops selling cosmetics, abayas, and wedding dresses, creating thousands of new jobs for women. By 2013, several large supermarket chains began hiring female cashiers.
Conservatives responded with fury-Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz al-Sheikh called employing women in lingerie shops a "crime," clerics threatened the labor minister, and writer Abdullah Muhammad al-Dawood encouraged his Twitter followers to sexually harass female cashiers to discourage women from working. The scale of backlash suggested that even these limited changes had profoundly shaken Saudi society.
By 2013, confrontations between religious police and female retail employees became so frequent that the labor ministry negotiated new terms with the religious authorities, requiring stores employing both sexes to install partitions at least five feet high. Female employees developed their own strategies-claiming to be new employees to receive lighter treatment, or hurrying to break rooms when religious police appeared.
Despite these tensions, many saleswomen consistently expressed respect for the religious police's efforts. Reema Mohamed, a conservative divorcee working as a cashier, expressed pain over these confrontations while still believing the religious police serve an important purpose. Her experience working has sparked her interest in women's rights, and she's raising her sons to treat women with respect.
This seemingly small change-allowing women to sell lingerie to other women-created ripples throughout Saudi society, opening new employment opportunities and challenging deeply held beliefs about gender roles.
