Thomas Paine (1737–1809), le pamphlétaire incendiaire et philosophe politique derrière Le Sens commun, a révolutionné la pensée révolutionnaire grâce à ses arguments persuasifs en faveur de l'indépendance américaine.

Né à Thetford, en Angleterre, le début de carrière de Paine a alterné entre la collecte d'impôts et le journalisme avant son émigration en Amérique en 1774, où son pamphlet de 1776, Le Sens commun, est devenu une pierre angulaire de l'idéologie révolutionnaire. Mêlant les principes des Lumières à une prose accessible, l'œuvre de Paine a galvanisé le soutien public pour la rupture avec la Grande-Bretagne, présentant l'indépendance à la fois comme un impératif moral et une nécessité pratique.

Ses œuvres ultérieures, notamment la série La Crise américaine — célèbre pour avoir été lue aux troupes de George Washington — et Les Droits de l'homme, une défense des idéaux démocratiques, ont consolidé son héritage en tant que voix fondamentale de la philosophie politique.
