Johnson argues that when societal needs arise, our first impulse should be building peer networks to solve them. This struggle between forager values and civilizational values appears everywhere. Progressive agendas often align with forager values (equitable resource distribution, support for the vulnerable, women's autonomy), while conservative agendas frequently reflect agricultural values (individual rights over community, male control of female sexuality, wealth exaltation). Looking to our future, we face three possible paths: collapse through denial and anger, technological dehumanization through bargaining and depression, or acceptance-strategically incorporating hunter-gatherer thinking into modern life through horizontal organization, clean energy, and population reduction. Though unlikely, this third path represents our only road home, a circular journey back to our origins while moving forward. The book's central thesis emerges: the truest forms of progress are often built on understanding the past. As Jung wrote, "Reforms by advances... are dubious and dearly paid for," while "reforms by retrogressions... return to the simpler, tried and tested ways of the past." Our species' wild origins can guide how we design our modern zoo, potentially allowing us to slip constraints that have shaped human history since civilization began. Despite the grim outlook presented throughout this book, the author maintains hope-though not optimism. Hope embraces the unknown, while optimism believes everything will be fine. By unleashing primordial human impulses toward trust and compassion, we may create a future worthy of our past.
