Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) était une poétesse et romancière américaine dont le recueil posthume Ariel l'a établie comme l'une des voix les plus influentes du XXe siècle dans la poésie confessionnelle.

Née à Boston, dans le Massachusetts, l'œuvre intensément personnelle de Plath explore les thèmes de l'identité, de la mort, de l'angoisse mentale et de l'aliénation à travers une imagerie vive, souvent troublante, associée à un usage magistral de l'allitération et de la rime.

Écrivaine talentueuse ayant publié son premier poème à l'âge de huit ans et diplômée summa cum laude du Smith College, elle épousa le poète britannique Ted Hughes en 1956. Son roman semi-autobiographique La Cloche de détresse (The Bell Jar) et son premier recueil de poésie Le Colosse (The Colossus) témoignent davantage de sa puissance émotionnelle brute et de sa virtuosité technique.

Malgré sa lutte contre une dépression sévère tout au long de sa vie, Plath a créé une œuvre qui continue de résonner profondément auprès des lecteurs. Ses Collected Poems ont remporté le prix Pulitzer de poésie en 1982, faisant d'elle la première poétesse à recevoir cet honneur prestigieux à titre posthume.
