Solomon Northup, auteur des mémoires fondamentaux Twelve Years a Slave (Douze ans d'esclavage), était un Afro-Américain né libre dont l'expérience bouleversante d'avoir été enlevé et réduit en esclavage pendant douze ans a scellé son héritage en tant que voix pivot de la littérature abolitionniste.
