Mark Epstein

Mark Epstein is a psychiatrist and bestselling author whose work explores the intersection of Buddhism and psychotherapy, especially questions of trauma, desire, and the self. Known for Thoughts Without a Thinker, Going to Pieces Without Falling Apart, and Advice Not Given, he has helped bring Buddhist psychology to mainstream Western readers.

Biographie et Parcours de l'Auteur

Mark Epstein built his career at the meeting point of psychiatry and contemplative practice. Educated at Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, he moved into psychiatry in New York City after first immersing himself in Buddhist study and vipassana meditation. His official biography dates that meditation practice to 1974, and his memoir-centered writing recalls formative encounters with teachers such as Ram Dass, Joseph Goldstein, and Jack Kornfield before he began formal psychiatric training. That double formation became the decisive turn in his professional life: instead of treating Buddhism and psychotherapy as separate worlds, he made their overlap the subject of his clinical work, teaching, and books. He has continued to maintain a private practice in New York and has taught in New York University’s psychotherapy and psychoanalysis program.
