Allen Carr was a British author and smoking-cessation advocate best known for The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. His work focused on addiction, quitting smoking, and behavior change through psychological reframing rather than willpower. The book became an international self-help bestseller, selling millions of copies and inspiring the global Allen Carr’s Easyway program.
Allen John Carr was born in London on September 2, 1934, and grew up in Putney, where he attended Wandsworth Boys School on scholarship. After National Service in the RAF, where he served as a drill instructor, he trained as an accountant and qualified in 1958. The profession gave him security but little enthusiasm; smoking, by contrast, became a defining and destructive part of his adult routine, eventually reaching as many as 100 cigarettes a day. A family history of smoking-related illness made that dependence especially stark. The decisive turning point came in 1983, after repeated failures with conventional quitting methods, when Carr concluded that the real trap was not weak willpower but the belief that cigarettes offered comfort, reward, or relief.
