The geological event on June 24, 2024, was a rare doublet earthquake characterized by two massive strikes in less than sixty seconds. It began with a magnitude 7.2 foreshock and was followed almost immediately by a massive 7.5 magnitude tremor. This event is considered the most significant seismic threat to the region since 1900, rivaling a 7.7 magnitude quake from the turn of the twentieth century.
While the epicenter was located near Morón, approximately 100 miles west of Caracas, the destruction was widespread. The coastal state of La Guaira was officially designated a disaster zone due to the severity of the impact. Additionally, while an earlier offshore event occurred in the Paria Peninsula, the twin strikes near Morón caused the most significant casualties and structural damage across the coastline.
The doublet earthquake resulted in at least 32 deaths and over 700 injuries in a matter of moments. Beyond the tragic loss of life, the tremors caused severe structural damage to Venezuela's largest aviation hub and vital water infrastructure. Authorities suggest that because of the scale of the destruction in the disaster zones, the recovery process for these essential systems will likely span several years.
