Nia: Hey there, welcome back to The Meaningful Life podcast! I've been thinking a lot lately about how easy it is to get caught up in the daily grind and lose sight of what truly matters. You know what I mean, Jackson?
Jackson: Absolutely, Nia. It's like we're on this hamster wheel of productivity and busyness, and suddenly we look up and wonder if what we're doing actually aligns with who we want to be. I was struck by something Robert MacPhee said in his Values Based Life podcast—that people who are truly fulfilled are those who live in alignment with what's most important to them.
Nia: That's fascinating! And it makes so much sense. I remember reading about that guy Ricky Locke who had this major health scare with those "suicide headaches" that landed him in the hospital. It took something that dramatic for him to realize he'd completely forgotten his own values.
Jackson: Right! And what's really interesting is how he discovered that he had mental health and physical health way down at numbers 18 and 19 on his values list, when those things are actually foundational to everything else he wanted.
Nia: It's kind of like trying to build a house without a foundation, isn't it? We think we value freedom, fun, and family, but we can't truly enjoy those things if we're not taking care of ourselves first.
Jackson: Exactly. And Brené Brown talks about this too—how values aren't just abstract concepts but need to be translated into specific behaviors. She calls it taking values from "bullshit to behavior." Only about 10% of organizations have actually operationalized their values into observable actions that people can be held accountable for.
Nia: So it's not enough to just say "I value growth" or "I value courage"—we need to define what that looks like in our everyday choices?
Jackson: That's it. And when we don't do that work, we end up feeling disconnected and unfulfilled. Let's explore how we can identify our core values and actually start living them in meaningful ways...
