Explore the Taoist concept of the Uncarved Block and the Diamond Sutra. Learn how living without attachment and practicing spiritual subtraction can reduce suffering.

The secret to living well isn’t about how well you carve the stone, but about realizing the stone was already complete before you even touched it.
An exploration of the shared essence between the Diamond Sutra and the Tao Te Ching, focused specifically on the theme of living without attachment.

The Uncarved Block, or pu, represents a state of original simplicity and wholeness before we begin imposing labels or categories on reality. According to the Tao Te Ching, we often spend our lives 'carving' our identities through roles, possessions, and achievements. By returning to the state of the Uncarved Block, we move away from rigid definitions of success and failure, embracing a more natural and complete way of being.
Living without attachment involves letting go of the rigid images and ideals we try to carve out for ourselves, our careers, and our lives. Both the Diamond Sutra and Taoist philosophy suggest that the act of carving reality into categories like 'good' versus 'bad' is what creates human suffering. By practicing non-attachment and realizing that life is already complete, we can find peace and move toward a state similar to Nirvana.
Spiritual subtraction is the counterintuitive idea that growth is not about adding knowledge, status, or better habits, but about letting go. Instead of hacking away at ourselves to find a 'masterpiece,' we subtract the attachments to carved images and labels we have accumulated. This process of subtraction allows us to return to a state of simplicity and original wholeness, as discussed in the teachings of the Tao Te Ching and the Diamond Sutra.
