    This concept refers to the way the vagus nerve communicates within the human body. Approximately 80% of the messages traveling along this nerve are afferent, meaning they move from the body up to the brain, while only 20% are efferent, moving from the brain down to the body. This biological reality suggests that the body is often the primary source of information regarding our emotional state, and the brain subsequently creates a narrative or "story" to match the physical sensations it receives.

    The nervous system operates like a ladder with three hierarchical levels. At the top is the Ventral Vagal state, which is the zone of social engagement where one feels safe, grounded, and connected. The middle rung is Sympathetic Activation, commonly known as "fight-or-flight," characterized by anxiety, a racing heart, and high energy. The bottom rung is the Dorsal Vagal state, or "freeze and collapse," where the body hits an emergency brake, resulting in feelings of numbness, disconnection, or total exhaustion as a survival mechanism to conserve energy.

    Women’s nervous systems are influenced by unique hormonal cycles and a biological predisposition toward "tend and befriend" rather than just "fight or flight." Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone can expand or contract a woman's "Window of Tolerance," making certain stressors feel more intense depending on the time of the month or life stage, such as perimenopause. Additionally, women are often socially conditioned to prioritize belonging over authenticity, which can lead the nervous system to "fawn" or appease others as a specialized survival strategy.

    Neuroception is an invisible, 24/7 internal surveillance system that scans the environment and internal organs for signs of danger without conscious thought. It processes cues such as a person's tone of voice, facial expressions, or even the "weather" of a relationship to answer the fundamental question: "Am I safe?" Because this happens below the level of conscious awareness, a person may find themselves in a state of fear or shutdown before their thinking brain has even identified a specific threat.

    When the body is stuck in a fight-or-flight state, it is often holding onto "unfinished" survival energy. To release this, one can use "bottom-up" somatic tools that speak the body's language rather than trying to think their way out of it. Effective methods include the "physiological sigh" (two quick inhales followed by a long exhale), physically shaking the limbs to release tension, or using "vagal toning" exercises like humming or splashing cold water on the face to signal to the brainstem that the threat has passed.
