The Evolutionary Puzzle of Social Norms: Why Humans Cooperate

Mejor cita de The Evolutionary Puzzle of Social Norms: Why Humans Cooperate

    “

Humans are an ultrasocial species, not because we're angels, but because we're rule-users. Our success comes from a specific psychological shift: the ability to learn from each other and store that information in a shared cultural pool.

    Preguntas frecuentes

The evolutionary puzzle refers to why humans cooperate on a massive scale with unrelated strangers, which often contradicts basic biological instincts to favor oneself or immediate kin. While most social mammals operate on a system where the strong take from the weak, humans have developed complex social codes and third-party sanctions. This unique behavior makes us an ultrasocial species, creating a significant gap between modern human societies and our Pliocene ancestors.

Human cooperation is distinct because it involves shared moral systems and the concept of fairness, which are largely absent in other primate groups. In most social mammal groups, there are no third-party sanctions to prevent the strong from taking what they want from the weak. Humans, however, follow invisible rules and social norms that allow for peaceful interaction and cooperation among thousands of unrelated individuals every single day.

Being an ultrasocial species means that humans cooperate at a scale that does not initially seem to make sense from a purely biological standpoint. Unlike our primate relatives or Pliocene ancestors who lived in smaller, self-interested groups, humans have bridged a massive evolutionary gap to establish social norms. These norms include invisible rules like waiting in lines and respecting others' property, which facilitate large-scale social harmony and fairness.
