El Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de Italia (MAECI) otorga contribuciones económicas directas para la creación o el mantenimiento de cátedras de lengua italiana en universidades públicas y privadas de México. Este programa busca que las instituciones contraten docentes para impartir el idioma, cubriendo el gobierno italiano una parte de los honorarios. El objetivo estratégico es que el idioma sirva como puerta de entrada a industrias donde Italia es líder, como el diseño, la arquitectura, la economía y la enogastronomía, fomentando así futuros aliados comerciales y culturales.
Las universidades deben presentar un proyecto sólido y autónomo que demuestre innovación tecnológica, como el uso de e-books o plataformas interactivas. Se da prioridad a las instituciones ubicadas en zonas donde hay escasez de docentes nativos y a aquellas cuyas cátedras se vinculen con facultades de ciencias o diseño. Es indispensable que la solicitud se redacte en italiano, se presente en papel membretado y se entregue físicamente en el Instituto Italiano de Cultura en Coyoacán antes de los plazos establecidos en marzo de 2026. Además, las universidades que ya cuentan con un "Lector" (docente pagado totalmente por Italia) no son elegibles para esta contribución económica específica.
Para el ciclo 2026-2027, el gobierno italiano exige que los proyectos educativos rompan con el modelo tradicional de enseñanza. Se busca una "conexión digital fuerte" mediante el uso de ecosistemas de aprendizaje, materiales audiovisuales y herramientas que permitan la colaboración en tiempo real entre estudiantes en México y laboratorios en Italia. Este enfoque tecnológico tiene como fin descentralizar la cultura, permitiendo que el aprendizaje de alta calidad llegue a diversas regiones de México y no se limite únicamente a la capital.
El aprendizaje del italiano se promueve como una herramienta competitiva y un "sistema operativo" mental que facilita la inserción en sectores profesionales de vanguardia. A través de las cátedras y las becas IRE (becas del gobierno italiano para extranjeros), los estudiantes pueden acceder a intercambios en áreas como la restauración de patrimonio, la moda ética y la ingeniería de precisión. El objetivo es crear una circulación de ideas donde el conocimiento adquirido en Italia regrese a México para fortalecer empresas mixtas y proyectos de innovación local.
Además de las cátedras universitarias, el gobierno italiano financia la adquisición de material didáctico y libros para bibliotecas de niveles primaria y secundaria. También existen premios y subvenciones para la traducción de obras italianas contemporáneas al español de México, buscando que el lenguaje resulte natural y cercano al lector local. Estas iniciativas se complementan con eventos abiertos a la comunidad, como ciclos de cine y exposiciones de diseño, que utilizan a la universidad como un faro cultural para la sociedad en general.
