El apodo de "la única" se utilizaba en la corte de Viena con cierta ironía porque, a diferencia de sus tres hermanos mayores que fueron criados por su abuela, Marie Valerie fue la única hija que la emperatriz Sissi crió personalmente y con una dedicación obsesiva. Por otro lado, se le llamaba "la niña húngara" porque Sissi se empeñó en que naciera en Buda como un gesto político hacia Hungría, país que la emperatriz adoraba. Este nacimiento fue visto con recelo en Austria, donde se temía que la niña fuera utilizada como un símbolo para separar a Hungría del Imperio.
La relación era extremadamente intensa y, en ocasiones, asfixiante para Valerie. Sissi volcó en ella todo el afecto que no pudo dar a sus hijos mayores, obligándola a vivir lejos del protocolo de Viena y a hablar húngaro constantemente. Aunque Valerie amaba profundamente a su madre, sus diarios revelan que a menudo se sentía abrumada por la atención excesiva y las excentricidades de la emperatriz. Como reacción a esta presión, Valerie desarrolló una personalidad muy práctica y un fuerte rechazo hacia la cultura húngara, prefiriendo refugiarse en el idioma alemán y en la figura más disciplinada de su padre, el emperador Francisco José.
El matrimonio de Marie Valerie fue excepcional porque fue una unión por amor, algo casi inaudito en la familia imperial donde predominaban las alianzas políticas. Sissi le prometió que podría casarse con quien quisiera, y Valerie eligió al archiduque Francisco Salvador, un pariente de una rama menor y con poca fortuna. Para casarse con él, Valerie tuvo que renunciar formalmente a sus derechos al trono austríaco. Esta libertad causó tensiones familiares, especialmente con su hermano Rodolfo, quien se sentía atrapado en un matrimonio infeliz por deber dinástico.
Recibió este nombre debido a su inmensa labor social y caritativa desde su residencia en el castillo de Wallsee. A diferencia de otros aristócratas, Valerie se involucró directamente en la ayuda a los necesitados, fundando hospitales y patronatos. Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, demostró su vocación de servicio al convertir parte de su propio castillo en barracones hospitalarios y participar personalmente en el cuidado de los soldados heridos. Su compromiso con la comunidad hizo que fuera respetada y querida por la gente común, incluso después de la caída de la monarquía.
Tras el fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial y la caída de los Habsburgo, Marie Valerie demostró su carácter pragmático al decidir no marchar al exilio. Para poder permanecer en su hogar de Wallsee y conservar sus propiedades, firmó voluntariamente los documentos de renuncia a todos sus derechos dinásticos y a los de sus descendientes ante la nueva república. Esta decisión reflejó su capacidad de adaptación y su prioridad por mantener la unidad familiar y su labor social por encima de los títulos nobiliarios o el estatus imperial.
