Tout commence en 1166 avec Diarmait Mac Murchada, le roi du Leinster, qui est chassé de son trône. Ce qui n'était au départ qu'un règlement de comptes local se transforme en une invasion étrangère massive lorsque ces guerriers, menés par Strongbow, voient l'opportunité de conquérir de nouvelles terres.
Richard de Clare, surnommé "Strongbow", était un seigneur normand et le principal chef militaire de l'invasion. Il a conclu un pacte stratégique avec Diarmait Mac Murchada : en échange de son aide militaire pour reconquérir le Leinster, Strongbow recevait la main de la fille de Diarmait, Aoífe, en mariage et devenait l'héritier officiel du royaume. Cette alliance a marqué la naissance de l'Irlande anglo-normande, bien que ce transfert de pouvoir par héritage ait été totalement illégal selon le droit irlandais de l'époque, qui privilégiait la propriété collective du clan.
Bien que peu nombreux (quelques centaines au début), les Normands disposaient d'une supériorité technologique et tactique écrasante. Ils utilisaient des cottes de mailles, de grands boucliers et des archers gallois capables de tirer plus loin et plus vite que les troupes locales. De plus, ils ont introduit le système de la "motte castrale", des fortifications rapides à construire qui leur permettaient de verrouiller militairement le territoire. Enfin, ils ont profité des divisions internes entre les rois irlandais, qui n'ont pas réussi à s'unir durablement contre l'envahisseur.
Henry II n'est pas arrivé au début de l'invasion, mais il est intervenu en 1171 pour s'assurer que ses propres barons, comme Strongbow, ne créent pas un royaume indépendant rival du sien. Il a débarqué avec 4 000 hommes pour affirmer sa souveraineté, devenant le premier roi d'Angleterre à fouler le sol irlandais. Il a utilisé la religion comme justification, s'appuyant sur une bulle papale l'autorisant à "réformer" l'Église irlandaise, et a forcé les chefs locaux et les seigneurs normands à lui prêter allégeance, transformant une expédition de mercenaires en une colonisation d'État.
Cette expression désigne les "Hiberno-Normands", ces colons arrivés avec l'invasion qui se sont rapidement intégrés à la population locale. Malgré les tentatives de la couronne anglaise pour maintenir une séparation stricte, de nombreux seigneurs normands ont adopté la langue gaélique, se sont mariés avec des Irlandaises et ont adopté les coutumes du pays. Ce processus d'assimilation a créé une identité hybride et a complexifié le contrôle de l'Angleterre sur l'île, car ses propres représentants finissaient par s'identifier davantage à l'Irlande qu'à la monarchie anglaise.
