En un giro sorprendente de los acontecimientos en 1968, Joaquín Sabina fue detenido por su propio padre, Jerónimo Sabina, quien se desempeñaba como comisario de policía en Úbeda. A pesar de la situación política bajo la dictadura en España, Jackson destaca que su padre se portó como un caballero durante el arresto y el posterior interrogatorio en Granada, sufriendo incluso humillaciones de otros oficiales por proteger la integridad de su hijo y sus amigos del Partido Comunista.
El exilio de Joaquín Sabina fue provocado por su activa militancia política y acciones de protesta contra el régimen. Según relata Eli, en el año 1970, el joven Sabina lanzó un cóctel molotov contra una sucursal del Banco Bilbao en Granada como protesta por el proceso de Burgos. Este acto de convicción política, sumado a su pertenencia al Partido Comunista, lo obligó a abandonar el país para evitar las represalias de la dictadura española de la época.
A los diecinueve años, mientras era estudiante, Joaquín Sabina ya formaba parte del Partido Comunista en una España bajo dictadura. Esta afiliación política marcó el inicio de su faceta como rebelde con causa, llevándolo a participar en actividades de extrema izquierda. Como explican Eli y Jackson, su compromiso era tal que no solo participaba en reuniones clandestinas, sino que también se involucró en actos de protesta directa que eventualmente definieron su historia personal y su camino al escenario.
